Homes Under the Hammer regular Clive Emson has died at the age of 79.
The popular TV auctioneer, known for hosting the show for over 20 years and watched by millions, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 13th, surrounded by his family. KentOnline was the first to report his death.
Emson, a well-respected businessman famous for saying “have gavel, will travel!”, founded Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers. The auction house operates throughout the south of England, from his home county of Kent all the way to Cornwall, and includes the Isle of Wight.
I learned that this individual received an MBE in 2019, and it wasn’t for anything on screen. It was a recognition of all the incredible work he does quietly, helping young people in Kent who are facing tough times. It’s really inspiring to see someone use their platform to give back in such a meaningful way.
Despite becoming a successful entrepreneur, he started with very modest means, making only £1.50 a week as a junior estate agent when he first began working.
He previously told KentOnline that he struggled with traditional schooling and left King’s School in Rochester at age 16 with few qualifications.
He admitted 2022 was a difficult period, and that he was very difficult to be around during that time.
The auctioneer became well-known because he often appeared on the TV show Homes Under the Hammer.
He explained that they used to get weekly offers from TV shows wanting to include a fake bidder. He questioned how that would even work, pointing out that once the auctioneer’s hammer falls, the property legally belongs to the winning bidder.
He also felt the show improved the auction house’s reputation and shifted the idea that it was mainly used by untrustworthy dealers.
Homes Under the Hammer, a show where people buy properties at auction, renovate them, and discover their new worth, has been on television since 2003. Martin Roberts has been the show’s host from the very beginning, and is now joined by presenters Martel Maxwell, Dion Dublin, Jacqui Joseph, Tommy Walsh, and Owain Wyn Evans.
The show marked its 20th anniversary in 2023 with a special episode, welcoming celebrity guests like Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen, Alex Jones, Toyah Willcox, and Amanda Lovett.
