Robin has been a core part of the Batman story from almost the beginning. Appearing less than a year after Batman, he’s remained his most important partner ever since. For decades, Batman and Robin were an iconic team, and Robin continues to be a key character in DC Comics. While they’ve always worked together, their partnership hasn’t always been easy. The different Robins have frequently disagreed with Batman, often because they wanted more respect or simply needed to communicate better. They argue often, but these conflicts rarely have a clear resolution.
Things are about to drastically change for Batman. A new take on the DC Universe, called the Absolute Universe, has flipped the script on the Robins – once his trusted allies, they’re now his biggest enemies’ key soldiers. Issue #20 of Absolute Batman kicked off a major conflict with all five Absolute Robins, and it’s shaping up to be one of Batman’s most challenging battles yet – a battle he’s likely to lose. The Robins are poised to defeat Batman, at least initially, because he’s currently not at his peak.
Robins Trained to Hunt a Bat

In this alternate universe, Bruce Wayne never became a father. Surprisingly, the Joker stepped in and began raising orphans, using his wealth and expertise to train them into highly skilled warriors. He enlisted Deathstroke to push them to their physical and mental limits, essentially creating a team of Batman-level fighters. But he went further than just training – the Joker equipped his ‘Robins’ with powerful technology. Dick and Jason pilot giant, Megazord-like robots, while the others ride motorcycles that transform into individual suits of armor. This entire team is specifically trained and equipped to defeat Batman, overwhelming him with superior numbers and firepower.
The conflict started at a particularly low point for Batman. Still grieving Commissioner Gordon’s death and reeling from the discovery that the Joker had manipulated his origins, he confronted Joe Chill for answers. However, Scarecrow revealed a devastating truth. To make things even worse, Chill was driven to suicide, and Batman was falsely blamed. Devastated and isolated after severing ties with his allies, Bruce was immediately ambushed by the Robins, who knocked him from the air and encircled him. Despite Alfred’s pleas to escape, Batman stubbornly grabbed his axe, preparing to fight.
Batman’s Big Defeat Is Inevitable

Batman is on track to lose this battle. The signs are already there. It seems highly probable that Scarecrow has affected Batman with his fear toxin. We know Scarecrow uses crows to spread the toxin, and those same crows attacked Batman while he was at Chill’s location. Batman is clearly distressed and behaving erratically, even speaking to Alfred in an unusual manner. While witnessing Chill’s death would understandably upset him, his reaction seems far too extreme, suggesting he’s been compromised. Bruce is already losing control mentally. He might try to fight back physically, but his judgment is currently impaired.
Batman is facing opponents who are just as capable as he is, and he’s outnumbered. But more importantly, the story has been building the Robins up as serious threats, so it wouldn’t be believable if Batman easily defeated all five of them, especially given the challenges he’s facing. It makes more sense that he’ll be overwhelmed and forced to retreat, then return later with a better plan. I suspect he’ll team up with the allies he’s been avoiding – his friends. They seem to be starting to support him, and the story is really focused on the power of friendship and working together.
