PS5 Will Reveal the Most Played Games with Steam-Like Player Numbers

Sony is preparing to reveal a lot more information about the PlayStation 5 and its features with a new, currently testing, feature called Welcome Hub.

This isn’t quite the same as seeing how many people are playing games on Steam at the same time, but a new feature – discovered and shared by YouTuber Mystic – now shows the ten most popular games in your region, along with how many players they had throughout the week.

Currently, only a limited number of people are testing the widget, but a recent video shows us what’s coming to the US:

  1. Fortnite: 14.6m
  2. GTA 5: 5.13m
  3. Minecraft: 4.97m
  4. Call of Duty: 4.95m
  5. Apex Legends: 1.72m
  6. Marvel Rivals: 1.58m
  7. Battlefield 6: 1.51m
  8. ARC Raiders: 972k

Keep in mind this information is specific to the United States. Results will vary in other countries. For instance, EA Sports FC is expected to be very popular in Europe and the UK.

This player count is different from the number you see on Steam. It represents the total number of unique players each week – meaning anyone who played these games at least once in the past seven days is included in the total.

We’re not sure if this data includes information from both the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4, but it seems to be focusing on the PS5 version only.

The video makes a good point: while this data is neat to look at, the top ten probably won’t change much week to week, so it’s hard to say if we’ll learn anything truly new from it.

The widget also includes a feature that highlights sudden increases in player activity. For instance, if a game receives an update or goes on sale, you’ll likely see it appear here as more people start playing. This is comparable to the Trending Games section on SteamDB, and it could even offer more insightful information.

We’re glad Sony is starting to share this information, though it’s still less detailed than what you can find elsewhere.

Since this is still in testing, there’s a small chance the company might not release it to the public, but we don’t think that will happen. We expect it will be available to everyone once they’ve had a chance to review feedback from testers.
