As a huge fan of The Big Bang Theory, I was thrilled to hear they’re continuing the story with Stuart Fails to Save the Universe! It sounds like something really different – and maybe a little heartbreaking, given the title. It’s been seven years since the original show ended, and it’s so cool to see Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady working together again. This time, they’re focusing on Stuart Bloom, played by Kevin Sussman, and bringing back some other favorites like Denise, Bert, and Kripke. From what I’ve heard, this isn’t going to be the same kind of comedy we’re used to; it’s apparently diving headfirst into sci-fi, which is a surprisingly cool direction for the franchise!
The new series, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, follows Stuart as he journeys through different universes trying to fix a major problem he caused. He accidentally broke a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, and now the multiverse is falling apart! Completely unprepared for this task, Stuart enlists the help of Denise, Bert, and Barry. The show already sounded wild, but the first trailer shows it’s even more over-the-top and funny than expected.
The new trailer reveals more about what Stuart will be up to next, and gives an update on the group in Pasadena. It also hints that something bad might happen to Raj within that group.
Raj Is Not Involved In Stuart Fails To Save The Universe’s Central Device’s Creation

While the release date for Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is still unknown, it takes place after the events of The Big Bang Theory finale, where Sheldon and Amy won the Nobel Prize. Rather than providing a definitive ending, the creators, Lorre and Prady, chose to leave the future open for the characters, suggesting their lives would continue as normal. Stuart Fails to Save the Universe confirms this by showing Sheldon, Leonard, and Howard working together on the Vari-state Quantum Entanglement Device.
We previously discussed how the initial idea for the Stuart Fails to Save the Universe logline focused only on Sheldon and Leonard building the necessary equipment, which made logical sense. Now that Howard is also helping, it raises the question of where Raj is and why he isn’t included. It’s hard to picture Kunal Nayyar’s character being left out, especially given how often the friends usually spend time together. Even if they don’t see each other as much anymore, if the group stayed friends after The Big Bang Theory, Raj would definitely be involved in some capacity.
Interestingly, even though Young Sheldon was a prequel, Jim Parsons’ narration as adult Sheldon provided glimpses into what the characters from The Big Bang Theory were up to. While Leonard and Bernadette weren’t specifically mentioned in his voiceovers over seven seasons, their spouses were. Raj is the only one of the original main cast who hasn’t had any updates since the show ended.
What May Have Happened To Raj After The Big Bang Theory

Although the last season of The Big Bang Theory focused heavily on Sheldon’s Nobel Prize journey, the series finale surprisingly provided a generally satisfying conclusion for a show that had been on the air for so long. Most of the main characters found happiness, but Raj’s storyline felt incomplete. His relationship with Anu didn’t develop, and he was struggling professionally, leading to the possibility that he might have eventually moved away from Pasadena to seek new opportunities.
Interestingly, the idea of Raj leaving California was actually considered during The Big Bang Theory, though it never happened. Given how much his friends’ lives changed while his stayed the same, it’s understandable why he might want to start over somewhere else—not out of anger, but because he couldn’t find a similar path for himself in California. He could also have chosen to return to India to be near his family.
While it’s upsetting to consider, this situation actually provides a reasonable explanation for why Raj wasn’t part of building the Vari-state Quantum Entanglement Device. It’s actually a more comforting thought than imagining his friends deliberately left him out of such a big undertaking.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will release all 10 episodes on July 23, 2026, on HBO Max
