The new James Bond novel, ‘007 First Light’, is coming out later this month and features a younger version of the iconic secret agent, which has already sparked some debate among fans.
IO Interactive sees the reaction to their choice of Irish actor Patrick Gibson as James Bond as a good sign.
This game tells the story of James Bond’s beginnings. We see him as a new soldier chosen by MI6 to join and rebuild their 00 program. This Bond is younger and less experienced than most fans are used to, and that inexperience, combined with a bit of confidence, is a deliberate part of his character.
IO Interactive’s upcoming James Bond game is generating a lot of discussion, and senior combat designer Tom Marcham sees that as a positive thing, according to Eurogamer.
He believes it’s positive when people have different opinions about James Bond. Everyone has a favorite, and if a Bond film didn’t spark any debate, it would be boring. He sees the current controversy as a good sign.
Director Martin Emborg explains that the game portrays Bond as overly confident, and this is by design. He describes this Bond as a young and reckless character who hasn’t yet faced significant loss or danger. Unlike older versions of the character, this Bond believes he’s invincible, a belief he will be forced to confront.
Emborg adds that the marketing doesn’t always fully capture Bond’s unique personality.
This character is fueled by anger, which is a compelling aspect of his personality. He grew up as an orphan, likely experiencing a difficult childhood. He’s clearly been through a lot of tough situations, knows how to defend himself, and occasionally lets his inner rage surface.
You might not immediately recognize it just from a standard headshot of our James Bond. However, I think Patrick Gibson has done a fantastic job, and he’s a very charismatic actor – the more you see of him, the more you appreciate his performance.
As the game progresses, we anticipate seeing this new, younger James Bond evolve into the more experienced and recognizable agent fans know from the films.
Luckily, we won’t have to wait much longer to experience the game and see how the character develops throughout the story.
