Marvel Studios Is Officially Recreating One Of The Greatest X-Men Movies

The X-Men are officially joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday. The film is expected to be heavily inspired by a popular X-Men movie previously made by Fox. Several actors who starred as X-Men in the Fox films, like Ian McKellen, Patrick Stewart, and James Marsden, will reprise their roles in Avengers: Doomsday.

For over two decades, 20th Century Fox produced 13 X-Men movies, featuring three films focused on Wolverine (played by Hugh Jackman) and two starring Deadpool (Ryan Reynolds). The quality of these movies varied considerably; films like The New Mutants and Dark Phoenix were generally considered weak, while Logan and X-Men: First Class were highly acclaimed.

As a huge X-Men fan, I always thought X-Men: Days of Future Past was the peak of the Fox films. It took this amazing comic storyline and brought together the casts from both the original movies and the First Class prequels for a really ambitious time-travel plot – basically, trying to save mutants from being wiped out by the Sentinels. It was a huge hit with both critics and audiences, and now it seems Disney is trying to recapture that same energy with their current X-Men plans.

Avengers: Doomsday Is Both A Farewell & Reboot Of The X-Men, Just Like Days of Future Past

What made X-Men: Days of Future Past so important was its impact on the future of the X-Men film series. Fox had previously attempted a fresh start with X-Men: First Class in 2011, introducing actors like James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as younger versions of familiar characters. But it wasn’t until Days of Future Past that this new direction truly solidified.

The X-Men movies essentially have two different timelines, split by the events of Days of Future Past. The first timeline includes the original X-Men trilogy, while the second began with X-Men: Apocalypse and continued with Dark Phoenix. Days of Future Past used time travel – and Wolverine’s attempt to prevent a future war with Sentinels – to effectively restart the X-Men movie series for Fox.

Beyond simply relaunching the X-Men series with a younger cast, Days of Future Past served as a fitting conclusion to the original X-Men films. It provided a satisfying ending to the storylines begun in the first three movies and offered memorable scenes for the original actors, including a unique interaction between Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy.

As a huge X-Men fan, I’m getting really excited about Avengers: Doomsday! It feels like it’s going to shake things up for the X-Men in the same way Days of Future Past did. It seems like Doomsday is going to essentially be a fresh start, blending the X-Men universe with the main Marvel Cinematic Universe and kicking off a new chapter for the team. What’s really interesting is that they’re bringing back the original actors who played the X-Men – it’s the opposite of what happened with Days of Future Past, which focused on younger versions of the characters!

Details about the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie are starting to resemble X-Men: Days of Future Past. Both films involve timelines merging, time travel, and large groups of heroes working together. It appears Avengers: Doomsday is following a similar formula, and could launch a new wave of stories for the X-Men, just like Days of Future Past did.

Doomsday’s Similarities To Days of Future Past Are A Great Sign

The connections between Avengers: Endgame and X-Men: Days of Future Past are more than just interesting—they suggest a positive outlook for future films. Days of Future Past is often ranked as one of the best X-Men movies, and it successfully tackled a difficult task: rebooting the timeline with a complex, time-travel-focused story while also launching a new direction for the series.

Like Days of Future Past did for the X-Men, Avengers: Endgame could benefit from a similar approach, potentially leading to success. The return of Steve Rogers and the introduction of new characters feel like a fresh start for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, similar to how Doomsday revitalized the X-Men franchise. Endgame faces a significant challenge, but if it makes smart choices like Days of Future Past, it could smoothly transition the MCU into a new era.

Days of Future Past really set the standard for good time travel movies and for explaining complex science fiction ideas clearly. This will be especially important for Avengers: Doomsday, which will heavily feature the multiverse, time travel, and different versions of familiar characters. Hopefully, Doomsday will handle its sci-fi elements as smoothly and effectively as Days of Future Past did.

The fact that Doomsday shares similarities with Days of Future Past is a positive sign for the X-Men joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Days of Future Past was the strongest X-Men film to draw inspiration from, as it best captured the characters and the franchise’s use of time travel. This means Avengers: Doomsday could benefit from many of the same successful elements.
