Jason Momoa Confirms Chief Of War Season 2 Hopes Is In Limbo Despite Critical Acclaim

Season 2 of Jason Momoa’s Apple TV historical series is “in limbo,” despite critical acclaim.

Jason Momoa has appeared in two series for Apple TV+. He first starred in See (2019–2022), a three-season show set in a future where no one can see. He then returned to Apple TV as a co-creator and star in Chief of War, which debuted in August 2025. This series tells the story of the Hawaiian Islands coming together in the late 1700s.

In a recent conversation with The Playlist, Jason Momoa gave a quick update on the status of Chief of War. When asked about a potential second season, Momoa explained that the show was initially planned as a limited series, and now season 2 is currently on hold. You can find his complete statement below.

Let me be clear, there’s plenty of story there – it’s not that at all! We always planned it as a limited series, and that’s what we delivered. We’re really proud of it and thrilled to be nominated for awards – hopefully, it’ll really resonate with people. Right now, we’re just seeing what happens next, waiting to find out if there’s more to come. It’s a bit of a ‘wait and see’ moment for us.

Created with Thomas Paʻa Sibbett, Chief of War features Jason Momoa as Ka’iana, a powerful warrior from Maui. The series follows his fight to unite the Hawaiian islands in the late 1700s, protecting them from being taken over by colonizers, and tells this story from a Hawaiian point of view.

The cast of Chief of War features Luciane Buchanan, Te Ao o Hinepehinga, Te Kohe Tuhaka, Brandon Finn, Siua Ikale’o, Mainei Kinimaka, Roimata Fox, Keala Kahuanui-Paleka, Moses Goods, James Udom, Benjamin Hoetjes, Kaina Makua, Temuera Morrison, Charlie Brumbly, Erroll Shand, Sisa Grey, Cliff Curtis, Ioane Goodhue, Branscombe Richmond, Jason Hood, and Kekuhi Keali’ikanaka’oleohaililani.

Critics loved “Chief of War,” giving it a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. They praised it as a powerful and realistic historical drama that vividly portrays Native Hawaiian history, with Jason Momoa delivering a particularly strong performance. Viewers also enjoyed the show, giving it an 84% audience score.

Jason Momoa considers Chief of War a deeply personal project. Born in Honolulu to a Native Hawaiian father, he later studied at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa. He began his acting career with a role on Baywatch: Hawaii between 1999 and 2001.

Originally planned as a short, self-contained story, the show Chief of War might actually continue beyond its first season. Creators Jason Momoa and Thomas Pa’a Sibbett have hinted at possible second and third seasons. While a second season isn’t guaranteed, it’s still a possibility. Positive reception and awards could improve its chances, but ultimately, the decision rests with those involved and depends on when they decide to move forward. For now, everyone involved is simply waiting to see what happens.
