Subnautica 2 Developers Say Players Who Want to Kill Things Should “Go Play Sons of the Forest”

Unknown Worlds, the developers of Subnautica 2, have addressed concerns about players not being able to kill the game’s larger sea creatures. In a discussion on the game’s official Discord server, a level designer explained that Subnautica 2 is designed to be an experience where players observe, rather than hunt, these creatures. They suggested that players who want to hunt large creatures might prefer a different survival crafting game.

The level designer clarified that this isn’t a game focused on killing. They suggested players who enjoy that type of gameplay might prefer something like Sons of the Forest instead.

The developer’s reply has been met with more criticism, as many fans of Subnautica 2 are discussing it on Reddit. One user questioned the value of offering an Early Access version of the game if the developers aren’t willing to consider feedback or criticism.

While the developers are asking for player feedback, it doesn’t guarantee they’ll alter the fundamental design of Subnautica 2. As one commenter put it, wanting feedback isn’t the same as promising to fulfill every request. Just like they wouldn’t be obligated to turn the game into a modern-day Earth-based first-person shooter if players asked, they won’t necessarily change the core game based on all suggestions.

“Am I the only one who thinks the no-killing is fine?” asked another Reddit user.

As a big fan of the Subnautica games, I remember that both the original and Below Zero let you fight the massive creatures, the Leviathans. But even though you could take them on, it was never easy – they always put up a real fight!

It’s interesting that players have started creating mods for Subnautica 2 that let them fight the underwater creatures. One popular mod, called Killable Creatures, lets you battle almost anything in the game, from small fish like Nibblers to huge creatures like Hammerheads and the Collector.

The recent Early Access launch of Subnautica 2 was a huge hit! In just 12 hours, Unknown Worlds reported selling over 2 million copies. The studio also shared that they have a lot more content planned for the survival game and have released a development roadmap.

Our first big update after launching into Early Access will focus on making the game more enjoyable with improvements to things like Biomods, Blight encounters, Wrecks, and the PDA. We’ll follow that up with another major update designed to enhance cooperative play, specifically with clearer HUD signals and improvements to the Base Builder.

So, Unknown Worlds has some really cool plans for the future of the game! They want to add a ton of stuff – new areas to explore with totally different environments, weird and wonderful creatures, more resources to gather, better tools, new vehicles to drive, and, most importantly, continue the story in a big way. I’m super hyped to see what they come up with!

Currently, Subnautica 2 is only playable on PC and Xbox Series X/S. You can find more information in our Early Access review, where we were impressed with the initial release but also noted that the game will likely be updated and improved over time.
