The Harry Potter films became huge hits thanks to their imaginative world and engaging story, but a key ingredient was Harry himself – he was a character audiences genuinely liked. While many successful franchises have strong stories and settings, a frustrating or difficult-to-connect-with main character, like Bella from Twilight, can really detract from the overall enjoyment.
Harry was best known for his wit, modesty, and courage, but many other fantasy heroes have become even more popular. These characters inspired devoted fans and helped make their films massive successes around the globe.
Hiccup From How To Train Your Dragon Was A Hidden Hero
As a total movie buff, I’ve seen a lot of heroes, but Hiccup really stands out. In a world obsessed with strength, he wins people over with his intelligence and kindness. He’s not your typical action hero – he’s kind of scrawny, a little clumsy, and everyone always underestimates him. But that’s what makes him so great! Instead of just blindly fighting dragons like everyone else, he actually tries to understand them, and that curiosity is what sets him apart as one of the best animated heroes ever, in my opinion.
Their connection is one of the most touching in film, and his dedication to doing what’s right, even if it means personal cost, makes you truly care about him. He becomes a strong and capable person, but his strength comes from a base of kindness and bravery.
Chihiro Ogino From Spirited Away Seemed Ordinary At First Glance
Chihiro started as a typical, somewhat complaining ten-year-old, which is what made her transformation so remarkable. She found herself in the spirit world without any special abilities or a grand destiny, but she bravely worked to rescue her parents and herself anyway.
Chihiro’s strength came from her determination, kindness, and unwavering love for others. Hayao Miyazaki created a relatable heroine who achieves her triumphs through genuine effort, and her journey resonated with audiences as if they experienced her growth alongside her.
Lucy Pevensie from The Chronicles Of Narnia Is The Sweetest Protagonist
Lucy consistently maintains her belief more than anyone else. As the youngest, she’s the first to step through the wardrobe and the first to trust Aslan. She notices things others overlook, and actress Georgie Henley perfectly captured her innocent sincerity and bravery – a remarkably difficult balance to strike.
Lucy’s strength comes from choosing kindness, happiness, and curiosity instead of being pessimistic, but she’s certainly not gullible. She’s a refreshingly genuine and purely good-hearted heroine – a rare find in fantasy movies – which makes her incredibly appealing.
Sophie Hatter From Howl’s Moving Castle Is A Silent Hero
Sophie seems quiet and shy at first, but her calm nature actually helps her. Despite being magically turned into an old woman, she accepts her fate without complaint and focuses on finding a solution. Sophie’s down-to-earth attitude is her greatest strength – she bravely goes to a wizard’s castle to fix things herself, rather than waiting for someone to save her.
Despite appearing practical, she’s actually a deeply loving person who can be incredibly fierce when needed. It’s very satisfying to watch her overcome her curse and, in the process, gain confidence and become truly herself.
Jack Sparrow From Pirates of The Caribbean Was Morally Ambiguous But Fun
Jack Sparrow isn’t your typical hero. He’s flawed, a bit of a mess, and often finds himself in trouble. Yet, he consistently manages to outwit his opponents and somehow save the day, all while pretending he didn’t even try. From his quirky movements to his unique way of thinking, he’s a truly original and unforgettable character.
Even though he often acts strangely, people still root for him. Jack Sparrow is a wildly eccentric but brilliant character, and no one has quite captured the same magic since he first appeared.
Westley From The Princess Bride Is Dashing And Funny
Romantic fantasy heroes like Westley from The Princess Bride don’t usually become so iconic, but Cary Elwes’ character had everything it takes to become a legend. He starts as a simple farm worker trying to win Buttercup’s heart, and ultimately transforms into a daring hero who saves her and overthrows a cruel king.
Despite facing incredible challenges – like sword fights and being seriously injured – Westley remains charming, romantic, and impressively calm. His goal is simple: to reunite with Buttercup, and he’s willing to overcome any obstacle – even crossing vast oceans and battling giants – to achieve it. It’s no surprise fans fell in love with him, and continue to do so today.
Aragorn From The Lord Of The Rings Was A Classic Hero
While many others readily embrace their roles, what truly makes this character interesting is his strong resistance to being labeled as such. Aragorn spent years avoiding his fate, believing he’d inherited flaws from his family, yet he still stood out as one of the most heroic and charismatic figures in The Lord of the Rings.
Viggo Mortensen gave a wonderful performance as a strong, yet world-weary man who gradually embraced his fate. Aragorn’s journey wasn’t easy; he faced hardship with bravery and carried the weight of his responsibilities with quiet dignity.
Percy Jackson from Percy Jackson and The Olympians Was A Determined, Loyal Young Man
Percy is a lot like Harry Potter, but in the world of Greek mythology, and he’s just as charming. He spent years being told his difficulties stemmed from being easily distracted and acting on impulse, but it turns out those very traits were actually his greatest strengths. Being the son of the god Poseidon, these qualities…
Fans admired Percy Jackson for his incredible bravery and unwavering loyalty. His commitment to his friends, Annabeth and Grover, and to doing what was right, was truly inspiring. Logan Lerman brilliantly portrayed Percy’s tough, witty personality, even though the movies weren’t as successful as many hoped.
Newt Scamander From Fantastic Beasts And Where To Find Them Was An All New Potter Character
The character of Newt Scamander, originally detailed in a companion book, has been brought to life on screen. In a magical world often focused on heroes and villains, Newt offers something different – he simply wants to care for magical creatures and live peacefully, which is a welcome change from the typical stories in the Harry Potter universe.
Eddie Redmayne portrayed Newt as a quirky but kind-hearted character who often struggled to understand social cues. He wasn’t motivated by a desire for victory, but by a need to protect those who were vulnerable. Even when caught up in a major wizarding conflict, his priority remained the well-being of the magical creatures he cared for.
Samwise Gamgee From The Lord Of The Rings Was The Truest Friend
Okay, look, everyone talks about Frodo in Lord of the Rings, but honestly, for me, Samwise Gamgee was the real hero. He wasn’t some chosen one with magical powers or a grand destiny. He was just a genuinely good guy with incredible loyalty and a fierce determination to get his friend back home. That’s what made him so relatable and, frankly, the most compelling character to watch.
Sean Astin’s portrayal of Sam is incredibly moving – his speech about finding goodness worth fighting for is considered one of the best in fantasy films. Sam consistently supports Frodo, literally carrying him when he’s unable to continue and bolstering him through his toughest times, effectively driving the story forward. In many ways, Sam was the true hero of the narrative.
