What To Know About Marvel’s Celebration of What If…?

Marvel has revealed details about the first issues of three new What If…? series: Runaways, Captain America, and X-Men. Each promises a thrilling story. Fans are especially eager for the Runaways issue, written by the series’ regular author, Rainbow Rowell. It will explore what happens when the Runaways team takes a path similar to their traditionally villainous parents.

Marvel’s What If…? Runaways #1 kicks off with a group of wealthy parents holding a charity event – or so their kids, Alex Wilder, Chase Stein, Gertrude Yorkes, Karolina Dean, Molly Hayes, and Nico Minoru, believe. They soon uncover a shocking secret: their parents are part of a dangerous organization called the Pride, who make sacrifices to a powerful, god-like race known as the Gibborim. The teens are understandably frightened, but also strangely drawn to the mystery and their unexpected destiny – a destiny they can’t escape.

The first issues of What If…? Captain America and What If…? X-Men will present dramatically altered versions of these heroes’ beginnings. According to Marvel Comics, What If…? Captain America—from writer Marc Guggenheim and artist Ron Lim—tells the story of Steve Rogers being revived in a world he didn’t save. Meanwhile, What If…? X-Men—by Ashley Allen and Sumit Kumar—explores a reality where Professor X never existed, and mutants are instead led by his villainous sister, Cassandra Nova.

The first issue of Marvel’s What If?, released in November 1976, explored alternate realities. Written by Roy Thomas with art by Jim Craig, it marked the official debut of this series, before the creative team worked on other characters like Namor, the Puppet Master, and the Super-Apes.

Marvel Comics kicks off the 50th anniversary of What If…? with the release of What If…? Uncanny X-Men #1 on June 3rd.
