Mel Brooks’ Cult Universal Horror Parody Confirms FX Remake Series

When it comes to horror comedies, Mel Brooks’s Young Frankenstein is a true classic. The 1974 film stars Gene Wilder as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, a doctor who discovers he’s inherited his grandfather’s castle in Transylvania. He soon begins to repeat his grandfather’s famous experiments. As a playful take on the classic Universal monster movies, the film is incredibly funny, and now it’s getting a spin-off series, Very Young Frankenstein, coming to FX.

FX has greenlit a new series called Very Young Frankenstein, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. The show, which has been in the works for a year, will feature Zach Galifianakis, Dolly Wells, and Spencer House in leading roles. Kumail Nanjiani, Nikki Crawford, and Cary Elwes will also appear. Taika Waititi will direct the first episode and serve as an executive producer, while Stefani Robinson is writing the pilot and will also executive produce.

Very Young Frankenstein Will Be Set Before Young Frankenstein (But Details Are Few)

We’re still learning about the upcoming series, Very Young Frankenstein. It seems the show will take place before the events of the 1974 movie, essentially acting as a prequel. Even though details are scarce, there’s plenty to be excited about! The cast is strong, and both Waititi and Robinson previously collaborated on the successful FX horror comedy, What We Do in the Shadows. Plus, Mel Brooks is involved, which makes the project even more promising.

FX’s new series, Very Young Frankenstein, draws inspiration from the beloved film while maintaining the playful and unconventional style that FX comedies are known for, offering a fresh perspective on the classic story. According to FX Entertainment president Nick Grad, with experienced creators like Stefani, Taika, and Garrett, alongside Mel Brooks, the series promises to be just as enjoyable to watch as it is to create.

Very Young Frankenstein Isn’t the Only Brooks Project Getting New Life

Mel Brooks isn’t just revisiting Young Frankenstein; his classic Spaceballs is getting a sequel too! Spaceballs: The New One finished filming late last year and is scheduled to premiere on Amazon MGM Studios on April 23, 2027. Brooks will return as both Yogurt and President Skroob. He’ll be joined by Rick Moranis, who is coming out of retirement to play Dark Helmet again, along with Bill Pullman as Lone Star, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, and George Wyner as Colonel Sanders.
