Married At First Sight UK Stars Say They Were Raped During Filming

Content warning: This story contains allegations of sexual assault.

Multiple reality TV contestants have come forward with serious allegations.

Two contestants on the show Married At First Sight UK have come forward to the BBC, alleging they were raped by their husbands on the program. A third contestant reported experiencing a sexual act without consent.

While filming the reality show—where participants pretend to be married and date while being filmed, including living together—each contestant claims their partner acted inappropriately.

The lawyers representing the men accused of rape told the BBC that their clients deny the accusations. The man accused of the sexual assault disputed parts of the victim’s account when contacted by the news outlet.

According to the BBC, none of the women have reported their claims to the police.

After the accusations became public, Channel 4 took the show off its streaming services and announced it’s investigating the “serious claims of misconduct” that were brought to their attention.

Channel 4’s CEO, Priya Dogra, released a statement on May 18th expressing her concern for participants on Married at First Sight UK who have been upset by their experience. She emphasized that the wellbeing of those who take part in the show is the network’s top priority.

The executive also addressed the accusations from those who said the network hadn’t provided enough support.

Regarding concerns about whether Channel 4 properly looked after participants in the show, Dogra stated that the channel responded promptly and appropriately to any welfare concerns raised, prioritizing the wellbeing of those involved, based on the information they had at the time.

To better support participants, Channel 4 commissioned an independent review of how people are cared for on Married at First Sight UK last month.

Dogra stated that they are deeply concerned about these matters and dedicated to maintaining their leadership in protecting and supporting contributors.

The production company for Married at First Sight UK, CPL, told the BBC they believe their system for looking after contestants is excellent and that their teams handled all the women’s situations correctly.
