Following reports of two alleged rapes during filming, Channel 4 has removed all past seasons of Married at First Sight UK from its streaming services.
On Monday, May 18th, the broadcaster revealed an independent review launched in April to investigate how well the series supports its participants. This came after accusations of mistreatment were made regarding a few former contributors.
A BBC Panorama investigation featured three women who came forward with serious allegations: two reported being raped, and a third described a non-consensual sexual act. All three women stated they felt the program didn’t adequately support them.
Married at First Sight, a reality TV show with successful versions in Australia and the US, features couples who meet for the very first time as they get married. They then go on a honeymoon and move in together to see if they can make the relationship work. The show is made for Channel 4 by production company CPL.
On Monday, Channel 4 released a statement saying they received serious claims in April about inappropriate behavior by a few former contributors. Those contributors have reportedly denied the allegations.
The channel respects the privacy of everyone who contributes and has a responsibility to care for them. Because of this, we can’t discuss or share any information about those claims.
Following the recent allegations, Channel 4 was asked about concerns regarding the well-being of people participating in its programs. Channel 4 maintains that it responded quickly and appropriately to any welfare concerns raised, based on the information it had at the time.
“Channel 4 strongly refutes any claim to the contrary.”

I was really moved by Priya Dogra, the CEO of Channel 4, speaking out about Married at First Sight UK. She shared how sorry she is to hear that some of the people who took part are upset, and made it clear that their wellbeing is always the most important thing to them at Channel 4. It’s good to know they’re taking this seriously.
I really respect how carefully she handled that tricky question. She explained that it just wouldn’t be right for her to talk about the serious claims being made against some of the Married at First Sight UK cast. She made it clear that the people accused are denying everything, and it’s not Channel 4’s place to decide who’s telling the truth. More importantly, she emphasized their commitment to looking after everyone involved, and protecting their privacy, which I think is really important.
Regarding concerns about how Channel 4 handled the welfare of people participating in its programs, I believe the channel responded promptly and appropriately to the issues raised, prioritizing their wellbeing based on the information it had at the time.
As the new CEO of Channel 4, I believe it’s important we always prioritize the well-being of those who contribute to our programs. Because of this, I wanted to review how we dealt with past concerns and see if we could improve our processes to better support them.
To finish, she explained that she’d asked for an independent review of how participants are looked after on Married At First Sight UK last month. The results of this review will be shared with her in the next few months. She emphasized that they treat these concerns with great seriousness and are dedicated to setting a high standard for participant care within the television industry.
Channel 4 also stated that Married at First Sight UK prioritizes the well-being of its participants, using thorough background checks, a clear code of conduct, and daily support from a dedicated welfare team. They believe these measures are among the most comprehensive in the television industry.
