John Travolta is revealing the phenomenal vision behind his Cannes Film Festival look.
The actor known for Phenomenon recently attended a high-profile movie screening with a fresh new style – a beret and round glasses. He explained what prompted the look, which quickly became popular online.
In a recent interview with CNN, published May 18th, veteran filmmaker John explained that after more than 50 years in the movie business, he sometimes struggles to distinguish between his own experiences and the stories he tells. He described a unique approach to directing, telling an actor, ‘I’m the director now, and you’re playing the role of one too.’
I researched photos of directors from the 20s through the 60s. I noticed the classic directors often wore berets and glasses, and I decided that would be my look too. I wanted to pay tribute to those directors by embodying the image of a director – I was going to play the part.
He also mentioned that the memorable fashion choice would help him recall the evening more clearly and make the memory more vibrant.
John Travolta, known for his role in Grease, went to a screening of Karma with his daughter, Ella Bleu Travolta, who is 26. The 72-year-old actor wore a black suit with a white shirt and hat, completing his look with a statement accessory.
Ella wore a black sleeveless evening gown with velvet accents, completing the look with Chopard jewelry and black heels.
John Travolta returned to the Cannes Film Festival for the first time since 2018, and the night became truly special when he received a surprise honorary Palme d’Or award from festival director Thierry Frémaux. This visit marked Travolta’s directorial debut with his film, Propeller One-Way Night Coach.
“This is bigger than an Oscar,” said the Hairspray actor to the audience on May 15, according to Variety. “I’m completely surprised! I really didn’t see this coming.”
John, who is also the father of 15-year-old Benjamin and the late Jett Travolta, described receiving the award as a very humbling experience.
He said he never thought his film, Propeller One-Way Night Coach – based on his 1997 children’s book – would be chosen. He was overjoyed when Thierry told him it had not only been accepted, but was making history as the earliest film ever selected, and he actually cried because he was so surprised and happy.
He also shared the project was the “most personal film he’s ever done.”
He explained that his sister and mother shaped who he is today, having a profound impact on his life. They instilled in him his aspirations and were there to see him achieve them.
He explained that this was just a small glimpse into his childhood and what life was like for him growing up.
