As a huge Star Wars fan, I’m really excited about The Mandalorian & Grogu – it’s the first big screen adventure for these characters in seven years! The movie continues the story we’ve been loving on Disney+ with Din Djarin and little Grogu (you probably know him as Baby Yoda). The creators, Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni, have said you can jump right in even if you’re new to the series, but honestly, having some background knowledge of the wider Star Wars universe definitely enriches the experience and helps you appreciate all the details.
With so many streaming options available, it’s understandable to feel like you need to do a lot of catching up before watching shows like The Mandalorian and Grogu. We’re here to help! Below, you’ll find a simple guide with everything you need to know to enjoy the series.
7. Mission Reboot

For three seasons on Disney+, The Mandalorian followed Din Djarin’s journey as he moved away from the strict rules of being a bounty hunter and Mandalorian warrior. He was determined to save Grogu, a child with special abilities, from enemies who wanted to use his powers. By the third season, Din, Grogu, and their Mandalorian friends fought back, taking control of Mandalore and rebuilding its important forge. After fulfilling his duties to his culture, Din officially adopted Grogu as his son. The pair then resumed their work as bounty hunters, now focused on finding and eliminating the remaining Imperial forces scattered throughout the galaxy.
The upcoming movie featuring The Mandalorian and Grogu will continue the story right after Season 3. Din Djarin and Grogu will be recruited by Colonel Ward (played by Sigourney Weaver), who leads a New Republic team called the Adelphi Rangers. Ward asks them to eliminate dangerous remnants of the Empire, but the mission proves more challenging than expected. Although it follows the TV series, the end of Season 3 essentially reset things, making this movie a good place for new viewers to start.
6. The Empire Is Rising Again

The galaxy is a dangerous place, making Din Djarin and Grogu valuable allies. The Mandalorian takes place five years after Return of the Jedi, following the Empire’s defeat at the Battle of Endor. Although a new government, the New Republic, has established some peace, the Empire isn’t entirely gone. Over the three seasons of the show, we’ve learned that leaders like Grand Moff Gideon were part of a secret group – a council of former Imperial officers – still following the orders of Emperor Palpatine, even searching for ways to bring Darth Sidious back to life.
Though Moff Gideon and his elite soldiers were beaten on Mandalore, he was only part of a larger, secret group called the Shadow Council, who are still plotting. Now, an even greater danger is coming: Grand Admiral Thrawn, a powerful Imperial leader who was lost in another galaxy during the war, has returned. His comeback (featured in the series Star Wars: Ahsoka) is believed to be behind the Imperial conflicts that Din Djarin and Grogu are being paid to resolve.
5. The Underworld Is In Upheaval

The remnants of the Empire are attempting to rebuild in secret, but the criminal underworld is in chaos. The end of the Civil War dramatically changed the power dynamics, weakening major organizations like Maul’s Shadow Collective, including groups such as Crimson Dawn and Black Sun. The Hutt Clan suffered huge losses, especially after Jabba the Hutt’s death in Return of the Jedi. Following these events, Boba Fett, a former bounty hunter, established his own criminal organization in The Book of Boba Fett, taking control of Jabba’s Palace on Tatooine.
Here’s what you need to know about the Hutts in the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu season: Several members of the Hutt family will appear as they struggle to maintain their influence. Jeremy Allen White, known for The Bear, will play Rotta the Hutt, Jabba the Hutt’s son. Rotta was originally seen as a baby in Clone Wars and is now an adult who fights in gladiator contests. The Hutt Twins, who took over after Jabba’s death in The Book of Boba Fett, will also be returning.
4. It’s A Tale of Two Orphans

Many people believe The Mandalorian brought back interest in stories about a lone protector and their charge. Throughout the show, the connection between Din Djarin and Grogu went beyond a simple father-son relationship; it became a story of two people bound by shared, difficult pasts. Both were orphaned during times of conflict, and Din Djarin provided Grogu with a family, traditions, and a way of life, mirroring how he himself was taken in by a group of Mandalorians when he was young.
Trailers suggest that the new season of The Mandalorian & Grogu will explore Din Djarin’s worries about Grogu’s future and how Grogu will cope if he’s ever left alone again. These concerns stem from past trauma within the Star Wars universe, particularly around parental figures and loss.
3. Baby Yoday Is Trained In Two Ways

The creators of The Mandalorian & Grogu are dedicating a significant portion of the film’s budget to puppetry. Grogu has always been brought to life with hands-on effects, and this movie will allow him to perform more complex and impressive actions than ever before seen in the series. We anticipate these effects will be showcased brilliantly.
Throughout seasons 2 and 3 of The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, Grogu faced a big decision: stay with his guardian, Din Djarin, and follow the Mandalorian lifestyle, or train with Force users like Luke Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano to potentially help restore the Jedi Order. Ultimately, Grogu chose to stay with Din, but Luke did teach him to use his powerful abilities with the Force. After being tested in battle against Moff Gideon, Grogu is now prepared to fight independently.
2. That Helmet Should Never Come Off

Promotional materials for The Mandalorian & Grogu show a lot of Pedro Pascal (known from The Last of Us, Game of Thrones, and Fantastic Four)’s face, which makes sense given his popularity. However, Star Wars fans are understandably curious about what the new season holds…
The show The Mandalorian established a rich backstory for Din Djarin and the group that raised him, a strict Mandalorian sect with very old traditions. A key rule for this group is that members are never allowed to remove their helmets in front of others. Din Djarin broke this rule multiple times because of Grogu and had to regain the group’s acceptance. Therefore, seeing him without his helmet, as shown in the movie, could have significant consequences for his future.
1. There Will Be Cameos

When The Mandalorian began, it was a refreshing, standalone Star Wars story. However, it quickly expanded, launching spin-offs like The Book of Boba Fett and Ahsoka. These shows have cleverly linked back to earlier Star Wars animated series, such as Clone Wars and Rebels. Overseeing this interconnected universe is Dave Filoni, a creative executive at Lucasfilm who was mentored by Star Wars creator George Lucas. Fans have now affectionately dubbed this growing collection of shows – all set in the New Republic era – the “Filoniverse,” with The Mandalorian at its heart.
Here’s what you need to know: The shows created by Dave Filoni are following a similar pattern to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, building towards a large-scale movie event likely focused on the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Several familiar faces are confirmed to appear in the upcoming The Mandalorian & Grogu season, including three Hutts, the bounty hunter Embo, and Star Wars Rebels character Garazeb “Zeb” Orrelios (voiced by Steve Blum). Expect even more returning characters! While some of these appearances might not be immediately obvious to casual viewers, don’t worry – we’ll provide a guide to help explain everything when the time comes.
The new movie, Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu, arrives in cinemas on May 22nd. Join the conversation and share your thoughts on Star Wars with other fans on the ComicBook Forum!
