In the debut clip of the series Pluribus, created by Vince Gilligan, the creator of Breaking Bad, we see a woman enjoying a variety of donuts from Sandy Pony Donuts, a real-life Maryland donut shop with branches in Delaware and Virginia. Instead of choosing just one, she indulges in the entire box. A note nearby, signed with a smiley face, invites: “Feel free to take as many as you like!” This can be interpreted as an example of ‘out of many, one’ becoming ‘many for all’.
Apple TV+ unveiled a sneak peek and announced that the series Pluribus will debut on November 7, initiating an intriguing marketing strategy. This includes a mysterious teaser poster featuring a smiley face and the phrase “happiness is contagious” as well as a donut truck stationed near San Diego Comic-Con. The show’s official Instagram account shared, “We have no intention of causing harm, Comic-Con. We simply wish to spread joy.
Carol, remember that your life is yours. You have control over it. You probably have lots of questions for us. Keep in mind, we just want to make you happy. We’ll get back to you soon.
In the initial glimpse, you’ll notice that Seehorn’s Carol reaches out to the team at “PLUR1BUS,” but they don’t provide many insights. As suggested by the tagline, Pluribus centers around the “most wretched person on Earth” who is tasked with preventing global joy.
Gilligan’s follow-up to “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul,” initially titled “Wycaro,” underwent development with the Emmy winner hinting about the upcoming series: “The world experiences a sudden shift in the first episode, and it becomes something completely different. I hope that this transformation sets the stage for numerous episodes filled with drama as we explore its aftermath.
In 2022, Gilligan hinted that the upcoming sci-fi series would be distinctly unlike “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul.” The show has been compared to “The X-Files” and “The Twilight Zone,” and is categorized as a “mixed, realistic genre drama” that combines drama with humor, delving into the complexities of human nature in an unconventional yet captivating manner.
In his own words, Gilligan assures us that there’s no crime or methamphetamine issues in the series ‘Pluribus’, which, similar to shows like ‘Breaking Bad’ and ‘Better Call Saul’, is filmed and set in Albuquerque, New Mexico. The series will debut on Apple TV+ starting November 7.
