The upcoming series Lanterns is generating a lot of excitement with each new marketing reveal, but as often happens, it’s also receiving some criticism. The recently released trailer showed fans how the Green Lantern rings will function on screen and gave a first look at Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan costume. The suit’s design appears to be inspired by adaptations like Injustice, leaning towards a more practical, astronaut-style spacesuit rather than the traditional bright green spandex or alien armor often associated with Green Lantern.
Fans immediately reacted to the new suit for Hal Jordan, and many criticized its colors and overall style. However, those who have been following the direction of the DC Universe might not be surprised by the design choices.
The DCU Has Different Flavors All Mixed Into One Gumbo

Focusing on Hal Jordan’s costume appearing worn in one scene of Lanterns misses the bigger picture – just like worrying about a lack of color in the initial teaser. The full trailer now showcases impressive displays of the Power Ring, and the DCU has already hinted that both Hal Jordan and John Stewart will have vibrant, comic book-inspired Green Lantern costumes, even if they aren’t perfectly accurate to every version.
It’s starting to feel odd that fans aren’t recognizing the connections being made. James Gunn, head of DC Studios, intentionally included Guy Gardner – a vibrant and over-the-top Green Lantern character played by Nathan Fillion – in his Superman movie. Guy Gardner’s appearance, complete with his iconic haircut and flashy ring powers, firmly established the comic book feel for Green Lanterns in the DC Universe. Now, with the Lanterns series, Gunn and creators Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof (known for HBO’s Watchmen and Lost), and comic writer Tom King (Wonder Woman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow) are aiming for a unique Neo-Noir Western vibe – an older sheriff training a younger deputy. While this is a departure from typical Green Lantern stories, it doesn’t mean the DC Universe is inconsistent or chaotic.
The DCU Is Already Making Different Styles Fit In One Universe

James Gunn and his team have subtly but effectively shown that the DC Universe is connected, consistently finding ways to link the different styles of its projects. A great example is Rick Flag Sr., played by Frank Grillo, who maintains the same personality whether he’s in the cartoonish Creature Commandos, the family-friendly Superman movie, or the edgy Peacemaker TV series. This consistency makes the DCU feel like one shared world with lots of different creative approaches. Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner is also playing a key role in connecting these projects, having appeared in both Superman and Season 2 of Peacemaker.
It’s now official: Guy Gardner will be in Lanterns, and that could mean a very different direction for the show. If Guy fits well into the series, then any worries about how the show portrays the Lanterns become less important – it would suggest we’ll see the bright, comic book-accurate versions of Hal, John, and the rest of the Corps. This show might simply be taking a different approach to that side of things, at least to start with.
The new series Lanterns will debut on HBO and HBO Max on August 16th. Are you planning to watch? Share your thoughts on the trailer over on the ComicBook Forum!
