Charlie the Wonderdog – REVIEW

Charlie the Wonderdog is an okay CGI-animated film. Owen Wilson provides the only recognizable voice as Charlie, a relaxed and charming mutt who belongs to a young boy named Jacob. The movie doesn’t really stand out as exceptionally good or bad – it’s just average.

I was completely captivated by the story of Charlie and his neighbor’s cat! One minute they’re just ordinary pets, and the next, they’re whisked away on a spaceship! The alien prince on board quickly lost interest, sending them back to Earth, but not without a change. Charlie came back as ‘the Wonderdog,’ a superhero with amazing powers, while the cat… well, let’s just say he became a huge, rather plump creature who now runs the show! He’s incredibly jealous of all the love Charlie gets for being a hero and saving people. And it doesn’t stop there! The President – she reminds me of a mix between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump – cleverly uses Charlie’s fame to promote her own dog food company. It’s a wild ride, and I couldn’t put it down!

The 2001 film ‘Cats & Dogs’ featured a rivalry between cats and dogs, predictably portraying cats as the villains – a trope that continues in this new installment. While the movie is fast-paced, it feels like that speed is used to mask a lack of original ideas and a story that unfolds in disconnected segments. Unlike Pixar films, which often include humor for adults alongside entertainment for children, this movie doesn’t offer much for grown-ups.

It’s ironic that a movie centered around dog food itself feels messy and poorly made – ‘Charlie the Wonderdog’ is a bit of a disaster.
