Nicole Richie, Daughter Kate Madden Make Rare Appearance Together

Nicole Richie and Kate Madden had anything but a simple mother-daughter outing.

Nicole Richie brought her oldest child, along with husband Joel Madden, to the Los Angeles premiere of her new movie, Stop! That! Train!. It was their first time walking a red carpet together in more than two years.

Nicole, 44, and Kate, 18, both looked stylish on the red carpet. Nicole wore a navy and white polka dot dress with a coordinating headscarf and a white coat trimmed with fur. Kate chose a short, strapless leather dress and completed her outfit with leather boots.

Nicole seemed thrilled to have her daughter with her at the movie premiere. She shared several photos on Instagram on May 19th, playfully captioning them, “STOP THAT TRAIN Premiere turned girls night out.”

This was also Kate’s first public appearance since her mother revealed she now prefers to be called by her middle name, Harlow, instead of her first name.

People were surprised when Nicole revealed Kate’s preferred name in an Instagram post on January 12th celebrating Kate’s 18th birthday.

As Nicole Richie—who is also a mother to 16-year-old son Sparrow—told People magazine in January, her daughter is living a full life.

As Joel, Kate’s husband, explained, their daughter chose the name Kate for herself at a young age.

He shared on the “Dumb Blonde” podcast with Bunnie Xo in March that she’s used her middle name since first grade, and that she picked it herself.

The Good Charlotte singer first learned about her decision during an open house at her school. 

Joel recounted that the teacher said, ‘Kate is doing very well. She’s a lovely girl.’ He explained that they were confused and asked who Kate was, and the teacher replied, ‘Your daughter, Kate. That’s the name she gave us.’

We headed home and Joel asked, ‘So you go by Kate at school?’ She said she liked it, and we were happy with that.

In fact, their daughter’s name has even become a litmus test for how well someone knows her. 

She goes by Kate with people who know her well, but others usually call her Harlow, according to the 47-year-old. She actually thinks it’s clever, because if someone uses Harlow, she immediately knows they aren’t close to her.
