Brooke Shields is remembering less of a love story and more of a love chapter.
The model shared that her daughter, Rowan, 23, told her she was referenced in the recent series Love Story, which focuses on John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Rowan had worked as a production assistant on the show, and learned about the mention through her work.
Brooke recently told People magazine that her daughter called her with some surprising news. Apparently, she was mentioned in the book Love Story, and her daughter wanted to know if it was actually true. Brooke described the situation as ‘a little weird’.
John (Paul Anthony Kelly) revealed to Carolyn (Sarah Pidgeon) on the show that although he and Brooke never dated, they did once kiss.
And Brooke confirmed as much for her daughter.Â
The sixty-year-old woman told her daughter she was willing to share her stories, but paused, simply adding, ‘butâyes.’
Brookeâs kiss with John F. Kennedy Jr.âthe son of President John F. Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassisâhas become a frequent topic of discussion with her daughters, Rowan and Grier, who are both 20. Rowan even asked her mom to participate in a TikTok video about it in March.
In the video, Rowan lip-synced to Taylor Swift and Charli XCXâs song âBoom Clapâ while a message appeared on the screen asking, âI wonder if JFK Jr. was a good kisser?â
The camera focused on the former star of Suddenly Susan, who tossed her hair over her shoulder as the words âOne of the bestâ appeared on the screen.

Brooke had shared before that although her relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr. didn’t last long, she never forgot the kiss they shared. He tragically died in a plane crash in 1999 along with Carolyn and her sister Lauren Bessette.
She revealed on The Howard Stern Show in 2023 that she and the person in question did go on a date. She also explained she didn’t want to be intimate with him, saying she had strong feelings for him.
The couple had dinner with his family, before heading off on their own.
Brooke described the kiss as the best she’d ever experienced. She was completely captivated, not just by his physical appearance â she thought his lips, face, and body were all beautiful â but also by his personality. He was grounded, funny, and didnât take himself too seriously.

She insisted they stop there, explaining that the journalist was very important to her.
Brooke explained she was worried about falling in love and the potential consequences. She said, ‘I was truly scared of getting hurt. If I’d slept with him, I would have given him everything I had to offer.’ She wasn’t trying to manipulate the situation, just expressing her deep fear of vulnerability.
To learn more about the accuracy of Love Story‘s portrayal of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy’s lives, continue reading.

Episode 9, sporting the gut-wrenching title “Search and Recovery,” had a lot to tackle.
The finale of Love Story quickly jumps into the coupleâs complicated history, covering years of ups and downs in their marriage. It opens with their therapist suggesting they try living apart.
Instead, they spend the day drinking at a local bar and eventually end up back at John’s place, where he hasn’t been lately as he’s been staying at the Stanhope hotel. That’s where he actually spent his final nights.
The couple fondly remembers their favorite kiss, triggering sweet memories of the past. However, the next morning, they realize their problems haven’t disappeared, and John bluntly asks if Rory’s wedding is still a possibility.
Reports indicate that John and Carolyn had a fight about her reluctance to go to the wedding of John’s cousin, Rory Kennedy, in Hyannis Port. This argument happened just days before their fatal plane crash while traveling to the wedding.

Honestly, I’ve read everything about Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, and it’s just fascinating! Everyone always talks about her sister pushing her to go to that wedding â the one that changed everything. But what really gets me is all the accounts of her, John, and Lauren having lunch together at the Stanhope before things got serious. It’s like, that’s where it all started, you know? All the biographers mention it, and it just feels so⊠pivotal. I’ve poured over every detail, and that lunch keeps coming up. It’s like a secret little moment before the whirlwind!
Regardless of how things were going between them, Lauren eventually joined hands with both people and they agreed to let her off on Martha’s Vineyard on July 16th, while they continued on to Hyannis Port.
In Love Story, Lauren informs Carolyn that she and John had already considered that idea. She then urges Carolyn to let go of her need to be right and instead focus on whatâs best for their relationship.
Oh my gosh, it was just⊠everything. Even as he was heading to the airport, Lauren was still trying to help! She texted John, telling him to just breathe and remember that they weren’t going to magically fix things instantly, that neither of them would change overnight. It was so sweet and realistic, and honestly, exactly what he needed to hear. I just⊠I can’t even!

After initially telling John she wouldn’t go, Carolyn unexpectedly appears at the George gala before Rory’s wedding, seemingly encouraged by a conversation with Lauren.
For the event â one of the few Carolyn attended with her husband that year â the show perfectly reproduced her sculpted Yohji Yamamoto outfit and sleek, pulled-back hairstyle.
The “Newman’s Own” George Awards were held at U.S. Customs House on May 19, 1999. This was before John broke his ankle, requiring crutches and a cast until the day before he passed away, and also two months before the plane crash.

Carolyn is growing more and more withdrawn in her Tribeca apartment, worn out by the constant attention of the paparazzi and hurt by the untrue and sensational stories in the tabloidsâtheyâve accused her of everything from being depressed to having a drug problem or being pregnant. When she learns about the death of Princess Diana in a car accident, she’s devastated and canât look away from the TV. Meanwhile, John worries about something trivialâwhether the dishes are cleanâand then goes for a run.
Carolyn recalls that despite Diana doing everything right and posing for photos, the paparazzi still pursued her relentlessly, ultimately leading to the tragic events of August 31, 1997, in Paris.

John later confessed to his wife that he feared she might become a recluse, and he was equally worried that if he began watching the news about Princess Dianaâs death, he wouldnât be able to turn it off.
In person, John tried to convince the Queen to appear on the cover of George magazine, but she respectfully refused. Carolyn also attended the funeral of Gianni Versace in Milan on July 22, 1997, and sat close to Princess Diana. Biz Mitchell, who was the executive editor of George at the time, told The Hollywood Reporter that John initially hesitated to cover Dianaâs death. Ultimately, they published a powerful photo essay documenting the publicâs mourning in London.
Carolyn was deeply affected by the death of Princess Diana, and John worried about how to help her. He told his friend Billy Noonan, “I don’t know what to do about Carolyn; she’s really shaken up.”
In her 2017 memoir, Jackie’s Girl, Kathy McKeon, who worked for Jacqueline Kennedy, shared a story about a family dinner in Hyannis Port following Princess Dianaâs funeral. McKeon recalls Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy saying she âhated those bastards,â and that she was referring to the photographers who constantly pursued her.
She said, according to McKeon, that she felt like yelling at them, explaining they had gotten very close behind her as they followed her inside.
To which John said, “You gotta just take it easy. Relax.”

Oh, it was awful! They’d just had a dinner party â John planned it, supposedly for ‘her friends,’ which instantly rubbed Carolyn the wrong way. She kept saying, ‘They’re our friends!’ And then, as she was clearing the table, it justâŠexploded. A massive fight. It was like all the tension from the whole evening just burst out. I mean, you could feel it building, but wow, it was intense!
There was some tension between John and Carolyn. John joked that he was glad he never let Carolyn meet his mother, implying she wouldn’t approve of their relationship. Carolyn, in turn, said John only contacted her when he needed to avoid conflict, adding that she suspected he found it difficult to see how unhappy he made her.
Their argument is completely destructive. She claims he doesn’t give her any room to breathe, and he accuses her of defining herself solely by her problems. It culminates in John announcing he’s going to stay at the Stanhope Hotel, exhausted by the look in her eyes that tells him he’s ruining their marriage.
She begs him not to leave, and he promises he’ll be back.
If this is the check-in at the Stanhope Hotel two days before the plane crash on July 16, 1999, it means the timeline of their relationship in Love Story jumps forward almost two years. Despite facing difficulties in their final weeks, they still managed to travel, socialize, and enjoy moments of happiness during their almost three years together.
As Beller pointed out, negative stories about their relationship â rumors of trouble or unhappiness â consistently generated more media attention, especially photos of Carolyn looking distressed. This pattern continued throughout their lives.

Just before things got tense, John proposed they go out, but Carolyn gently reminded him that he needed to rest. He was still recovering from a crash with his powered parachute, and was getting around on crutches.
She adds, “Didn’t you promise Caroline you were done flying?”
This scene, like others throughout the series, subtly reminds us about the characters’ eventual destination, hinting at how their love story will conclude with flight.
John was still recovering from a broken ankle when he took that flight. Heâd broken it in May 1999 while crashing an ultralight parachute, and was using crutches at the time.
According to Edward Kleinâs 2004 book, The Kennedy Curse, Jacqueline Kennedy begged her son not to pursue a pilotâs license. She reportedly said, âPlease donât do it,â fearing there had been enough tragedy and deaths in the family already.

I was absolutely glued to episode 7, “Obsession!” It was so stressful seeing the newlyweds come home from their honeymoon in Turkey only to be swarmed by the paparazzi. Honestly, they wouldn’t give the couple any space â they just kept hanging around and it was really upsetting to watch.
It was truly as awful as people said. Paparazzi relentlessly followed Carolyn, constantly asking her to smile for the cameras. When she refused to answer their intrusive questions â like whether she was expecting a baby â some began to insult her, hoping to provoke a response.
According to MJ Bettenhausen, as detailed in Elizabeth Beller’s biography Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, Carolyn worried that people would lose interest in her after she got married. Bettenhausen explained this was another way Carolyn’s independent nature was restricted.

For the movie Love Story, costume designer Rudy Mance accurately reproduced the complete Prada outfit Carolyn Kennedy wore when she first encountered the paparazzi after returning home with John Kennedy.
The womanâs outfit â a camel-colored pencil skirt, black sweater, knee-high boots, and black tote bag â mirrored her personality: stylish and sophisticated, yet understated.
Mance shared on FX’s Love Story podcast, hosted by Evan Ross Katz, that getting the props right for that scene was a big effort. They spent a lot of time sourcing items from places like eBay, Japan, Etsy, and Ukraine.

Carolyn was worried, but John tried to improve things outside their house. He asked the photographers to be respectful of his wife and give her some privacy as she got used to her new life.
According to Beller, he actually did that while Carolyn waited inside the entrance at 20 North Moore Street. He then stated that marriage is a major life change, especially for someone who isn’t used to public attention, and asked everyone to respect Carolyn’s privacy and give her space.
According to Steve Gillonâs 2019 book, American Prince, the brief peace between John and the photographers ended immediately after John finished speaking. As he and Carolyn headed to their car, the photographers rushed forward, each trying to get a unique picture. This chaotic scene terrified Carolyn.

Carolyn was thrilled about a potential job at Ralph Lauren and her interview went exceptionally well. However, as she was about to accept the position, she discovered a crowd of photographers had gathered outside, creating a chaotic scene. Feeling overwhelmed and embarrassed by the intense attention, she sadly declined the offer.
Although there’s no official record of Carolyn Bessette ever working for Ralph Lauren, the designer was reportedly very impressed with her style. According to Harper’s Bazaar, he once instructed his team to consider her aesthetic in all their designs, saying, “Every time you design something, think of Carolyn Bessette.”

Following a public argument between Carolyn and John, Ethel extends an invitation to her future niece-in-law, hosting her at her estate in Virginia, Hickory Hill.
Robert F. Kennedy’s widow offered Carolyn a stark but compassionate warning: once trust is broken, it’s incredibly difficult to regain, and that’s a painful reality. She cautioned that men could be deeply hurtful, pushing Carolyn to her limits, and advised her not to allow herself to be driven to despair.
Ethel actually had Carolyn brought to her home, where, according to J. Randy Taraborelliâs 2019 book, The Kennedy Heirs, she told Carolyn to ignore the negativity and move forward.
According to a friend who was with Carolyn, Ethel Kennedy once confided that being a Kennedy came with its challenges. But the mother of eleven explained she learned a crucial lesson: the key to coping within the family was to practice daily self-acceptance. She would tell herself, simply, ‘I am enough.’ Over time, she realized this was true, and that nothing â not even the pressures of being a Kennedy â could diminish that feeling of self-worth.
Ethel cautioned Carolyn against losing her temper in public again, as described in the book. She warned that these men were easily provoked and urged Carolyn not to let them bait her into behaving badly in front of everyone.

Carolyn tells her sister-in-law, Lauren Bessette (played by Sydney Lemmon), that sheâs considering asking her to be maid of honor. She explains that Lauren seemed upset about being left out of the wedding planning so far.
Carolyn worries that her sister feels left out. She believes resolving this is important because she doesn’t want any lingering resentment to affect her wedding and marriage.
Lauren says, “This will mean nothing to her. And it would have meant everything to me.”
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! So, John basically begged Carolyn to ask Caroline to be maid of honor. Apparently, Johnâs sister totally flipped out after⊠well, the park incident, and even said it was a sign she and John shouldnât get married! Can you even imagine?! John thinks the ONLY way to fix things is if Carolyn asks Caroline to be in the wedding. Itâs⊠itâs just so complicated, but Iâm completely invested in every detail, obviously!

Two weeks after their argument at the park, Carolyn went to Calvin to quit her job. She explained she was worried her personal life was interfering with her work, and Calvin admitted he was surprised and a little disappointed to hear it.
He described her as “a bright light” and assured her she would be well taken care of with Narciso Rodriguezâa former colleagueâdesigning her wedding gown. Once she’s gone, he tidies up his design portfolio, and we briefly see a dress sketch tucked away in a drawer.
“Calvin was very upset” when Carolyn quit, a colleague told Beller. “He felt left behind.”
In the movie Love Story, Calvin learns about the dress thanks to photos of Carolyn with Narciso and Caroline. However, in real life, Carolyn quit her job before she started seriously planning a wedding.

Ann Freeman (played by Constance Zimmer) fears Carolyn is losing her identity in her marriage. She expresses this worry privately to her daughter, but surprisingly reveals the same concerns to everyone during a toast at the rehearsal dinner.
Ann described John as overwhelmingly loving and admitted she was concerned for Carolyn. She wondered how anyone could stay grounded around someone with such a strong personality. Ultimately, Ann hopes Carolyn can rely on John to be supportive whenever she needs him.
John had a private conversation with his future mother-in-law, telling her that her daughter means everything to him.
It’s unclear exactly what Ann said that night, but John’s friend, Robert Littell, recalled in his memoir, The Men We Became, that she voiced concerns about the marriage, suggesting it might not be what her daughter needed.
And John, he wrote, was “visibly stung by his mother-in-law’s remarks.”
Littell mentioned that while he and a few other guests continued the party on the beach, Carolyn had already gone to bed hours earlier. This suggests the romantic scene in the movie Love Story â where John and Carolyn fall asleep together on the beach and go swimming naked the morning of their wedding â was actually a fictional addition created for dramatic effect.

Carolyn had a real panic moment when she discovered she’d have to pull Narciso’s dressâwhich didn’t have a zipperâover her head after her makeup was already finished.
Gogo Ferguson, the designer of the couple’s unique rattlesnake rib wedding bands, shared in an interview that dressing Carolyn was a struggle. She described it as if the dress was flowing like cream over Carolynâs body, while Narciso was desperately trying to fasten it. Terenzio noted that Narciso even had to redo the neckline, and afterward, they covered Carolynâs head with a scarf to protect her hair and makeup.
Gordon Henderson, a friend of the bride and the designer of the groom’s tuxedo and the groomsmen’s suits, shared with Town & Country that he offered a handkerchief to help the groom feel his best. He explained that when a friend is getting married, you want to do everything you can to ensure they’re happy and the day goes smoothly.
In Beller’s Once Upon a Time, Carolyn needs to redo her hair and makeup after she gets dressed.

The ceremony ultimately began at 7 p.m., later than the originally planned 5 p.m. John was delayed because he couldn’t find his shirt, and since the historic First African Baptist Church, built in the 1800s, didn’t have electricity, they had to use candles to light the space.

In the fifth episode, John proposes to Carolyn while they’re out on a rowboat. This happens right after she’s met his family for the first time in Hyannis Port, including his formidable aunt, Ethel Kennedy (played by Jessica Harper).
Carolyn said she needs some time to consider it, explaining they have several important things to talk over first.
In 1994, Per Beller and John brought Carolyn to the family’s vacation home for Labor Day weekend. John did volunteer for a breakfast duty, though he didn’t ask Carolyn to join him.
Terenzio says John proposed to Carolyn while they were on a trip to Martha’s Vineyard for the Fourth of July in 1995. He playfully told her, “Fishing is so much better with a partner,” when he asked her to marry him.
He proposed with a diamond and sapphire eternity band. On the show, JFK Jr. claimed it had belonged to his mother, but actually, John asked Jackieâs close friend Maurice Tempelsman to create a ring that resembled her famous emerald and sapphire ring, often called the âswimming ring.â According to Terenzio, John gave Carolyn both rings.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe the details I’ve dug up! Apparently, a friend of John’s told People that Carolyn made him WAIT a full three weeks just to find out if she’d say yes! Can you imagine?! Then, in a book called American Prince, it said she never actually said yes, but she started wearing a ring and telling everyone they were getting married! But get this â another source, in an oral history, said Carolyn actually called someone afterward and gushed that they’d gotten engaged during that holiday weekend! It’s all so confusing, but so romantic! I’ve been piecing it all together, and it’s justâŠeverything!
I remember following their relationship closely, and they were engaged for quite a while â months, actually â before that terrible fight in Washington Square Park back in 1996. It was such a shock to everyone who supported them.

Carolyn enjoyed a close relationship with her boss, Calvin Klein, and was also good friends with his wife, Kelly Klein, who was a photographer.
In Love Story, Kelly (played by Leila George) objects when Calvin tells her she canât continue working for him because their engagement â heavily publicized by a New York Post cover story â will be a distraction.
Kelly retorted, “With all due respect, you’re hardly one to talk about keeping secrets.” Calvin responded, “You knew what you were getting into from the start.”
The designer invited Kelly to join her at a gala that evening, framing it as a final outing and subtly revealing they were breaking up.
Calvin and Kelly announced they were separating in August 1996. According to columnist Liz Smith, they released a statement saying they remained good friends and made a mutual decision to live separately, with respect for each other, and hoped to resolve any differences. Their divorce was finalized in 2006.
Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! Calvin, the absolute legend, is still with Kevin Baker! They’ve been together for TEN YEARS! Kevin’s so gorgeous, and honestly, 46 years younger? Good for him! I’ve been following them forever, and they’re just the cutest. Seriously, Calvin at 83 is a total silver fox, and Kevin… well, Kevin is perfection. I’m obsessed with their relationship!

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn skips John’s press event where he introduces George magazine. At the event, he reveals the first cover, which features Cindy Crawford playfully dressed as George Washington.
She watched the news from home, understanding that John had no option but to deny proposing to her. She didn’t want rumors about her rejecting him to distract from the important news about George.
Carolyn intentionally avoided the launch event on September 7, 1995. Terenzio, responsible for publicly denying rumors of an engagement after a photo of Carolynâs ring surfaced, explained that John and his partner, Michael Berman, believed her attendance would be disruptive. He also stated that Carolyn didn’t seem particularly bothered by this.
John’s friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recalled in an interview that Carolyn was deeply upset by John’s refusal to publicly acknowledge their engagement. Chermayeff believed this was an early indication of the challenges Carolyn would face in the relationship â a preview of what life with John would be like.

In the fifth episode, Carolyn and John have a heated fight while walking their dog, but the episode concludes with a tearful Carolyn accepting Johnâs marriage proposal.
The highly publicized fight between the couple on February 25, 1996, became well-known, and many detailsâlike John appearing to remove Carolynâs engagement ring, John crying on the curb, and their argument over the dog, where Carolyn famously said, âYouâve got my ring, youâre not getting my dog!ââwere widely reported in the news.
The show centers around an argument sparked by John’s frustration over Carolyn rejecting his marriage proposalâhe angrily claims everything would be fine if she’d just said yesâeven though they’d actually been engaged for about five months. The series reveals that Carolyn had secretly tried on the ring and indicated she was willing to marry him privately, but hadn’t formally accepted before the fight began.
In her interview, Terenzio remembered that she and her husband often argued because he was being exploited by his friends.
At a wedding, they found themselves seated next to a reporter from the New York Times who was covering the event for the “Vows” column. According to Terenzio, Carolyn believed it was wrong to put a friend in that position. While she regretted the argument, she was also upset with John, feeling she had been trying to protect him from being exploited.

When he brings Carolyn home to his loft for the first time, John realizes he forgot his keys.
It looked great on camera, but the real John was actually pretty absent-minded. He was always misplacing things â keys, his wallet, you name it! It got to the point where Carolyn really didnât want to fly with him by himself after he earned his pilotâs license, because she worried heâd lose something important up there!
Beyond that hint of whatâs to come, John doesnât mention the true nature of the party when he invites Carolyn. He tells her itâs a party at his sister Caroline Kennedy Schlossbergâs house, but itâs actually a formal dinner celebrating Carolineâs birthday.
When Carolyn expresses concern, Caroline (Grace Gummer) quickly explains that John often forgets things, and she didnât mean to imply heâs bringing women home unexpectedly.

John introduced Carolyn to his sister on her 37th birthday, November 27, 1994. According to Carole Radziwillâs memoir, What Remains, the event was a party held at Carolynâs Park Avenue apartment, not a formal dinner.
The former Real Housewives star, who attended with Anthony and was excited to see Carolyn, described her friend entering the private room looking beautiful and completely herself, and acting very warmly and spontaneously.
Caroline embraced John and greeted Carolyn with a friendly “So nice to meet you,” according to Carole. Afterward, Carolyn’s friends offered polite smiles before turning their attention back to John.
Contrary to initial impressions, Carolyn and Caroline actually hit it off immediately, according to Beller’s book, Once Upon a Time. Someone who saw them having lunch described them as enjoying each other’s company, with lively conversation and plenty of laughter.

After playing touch football with friends, John discovered a letter in his gym bag suggesting Carolyn had used her boss, Calvin Klein, to arrange a meeting with him because she was interested in a relationship. When Carolyn visited later, John confronted her about the letter, and she was upset heâd believe such a thing, so she left.
After what felt like a long time, he finally came to her apartment and admitted he’d made a mistake. This honest conversation led to him telling her he loved her for the very first time.
According to Beller, John did receive a letter outlining alleged details of Carolyn’s social life and relationships, but it happened relatively early in their dating history. The book states that after dating in the summer of 1992, John abruptly ended the relationship upon receiving the letter. Carolyn then didn’t accept his apologies for over a year.

I was completely captivated by the first episode of Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette! There’s this amazing scene where Carolyn, played by Sarah Pidgeon, gently suggests to Annette Bening â who Megan Channell portrays so well â that she wear a Calvin Klein suit to the Bugsy premiere instead of the dress the designer actually picked out for her. It was such a small moment, but it really showed Carolyn’s eye for style and how she wasn’t afraid to offer her opinion, even to someone as established as Annette.
Itâs not known if she created the look for Warren Beattyâs future wife, but a 1996 New York Times article revealed Carolyn was the preferred salesperson at Calvin Klein for many celebrities, including Annette, Diane Sawyer, and Blaire Trump.
According to Paul Wilmott, who was Calvin Klein’s VP of public relations at the time, she expertly helped customers choose clothes, offering styling advice and showing them how to create complete outfits. He noted that she generated millions of dollars in clothing sales over the years.
In another scene from Love Story, Carolyn demonstrates her skill by suggesting to Calvin (played by Alessandro Nivola) that he hire Kate Moss for an advertising campaign.
Carolyn was one of the first people to recognize Kate Moss’s potential, and she played a key role in shaping the Calvin Klein image of the 1990s.

In the movie Love Story, Calvin brings Carolyn and John together at a charity event in 1992, and they immediately feel a connection. However, Carolyn playfully declines to give Calvin her phone number, reminding him that he can reach her at work.
âHe was simply bored,â Carolyn explained to her friends at the nightclub as Michael Bergin, known to them as the âsexy doormanâ and occasionally more, arrived. (Noah Fearnley played Michael.)
John unexpectedly arrived at Calvin Klein and requested a private fitting with Carolyn. He then invited her to dinner, and when he left, her coworkers were completely shocked and excited.
According to Elizabeth Beller’s 2024 biography, Once Upon a Time: The Captivating Life of Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy, John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy first met in the spring of 1992. John was at Calvin Klein for a private fitting, and her coworkers were reportedly very excited. He then asked Carolyn to join him at a gala, as MJ Bettenhausen told Beller. However, Carolyn mistakenly believed another woman was John’s date, so she declined his invitation to an after-party.

Carolyn and Michael, a former hotel doorman and model, briefly dated starting in the fall of 1992, but their relationship was mostly on-and-off, according to Bellerâs book.
Beller noted that many of Carolyn’s friends doubted Bergin’s claim â made in his 2004 book, The Other Man â that he continued a sexual relationship with her, not only after she met John, but throughout her life.

In the movie Love Story, Carolyn is waiting at an Indian restaurant for John. After about 20 minutes, just as she’s about to leave, he arrives riding his bicycle.
He accidentally left the car unlocked, and when they finished their long date, they discovered it had been stolen. This meant he ended up walking Carolyn home.
He said, “I thought I had more time,” as they reached her front door. She asked what he meant, and he kissed her. He then wondered if heâd see her again, and she replied that sheâd enjoyed their evening together before ending the date.
In real life, John and this person did go on a first date, and it’s possible he biked there and was a little late. However, the image of them connecting over drinks was likely staged for the show.

Daryl Hannah, Johnâs somewhat inconsistent girlfriend, is at his apartment when he returns home. Heâs just been telling his cousin and best friend, Anthony Radziwill, that all he really wants to do is call Carolyn.
He’s planning to take Daryl to a wedding in October 1993 â his cousin Edward Kennedy Jr.âs â despite his mother, Jacqueline Kennedy, being strongly against it. Meanwhile, Carolyn discovers through a tabloid magazine that the man who seemed so interested in her is actually getting back together with his famous ex-girlfriend.
John continued to send Carolyn flowers, and eventually confessed to her at an event that he was struggling because he believed she disliked him. Carolyn responded by saying she didn’t know him well enough to feel hatred.
The unexpected meeting was a memorable way to first feature the star of Splash, but producers didn’t consult with Daryl, who has been married to Neil Young since 2018.
Producer Nina Jacobson explained to Gold Derby that they focus on understanding the core of each character. She said it’s difficult to push specific storylines when basing characters on real people, so they generally avoid doing so unless absolutely necessary.
Daryl acts as a challenge to what the story needs, according to Jacobson, but the writers still make sure to show that she understands the celebrity world better than Carolyn does.

When John walks in and sees Daryl hanging out with her eccentric friends, it’s a clear signal that major changes are coming. She ultimately decides to leave him, pushing him to think about what he truly desires.
I was so heartbroken to hear about Hank. Daryl had told everyone she’d be back for him, but instead, it was John who ended up walking him. Can you believe someone asked him for an autograph while he was responsible for Hank? It was a disaster â the leash slipped, and poor Hank was hit by a taxi. Itâs just awful. Now, John had to fly all the way to L.A. to deliver Hankâs ashes to Daryl. Itâs a terrible situation, and I feel so badly for everyone involved.
According to the 2024 book JFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography by RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil, John F. Kennedy Jr.âs friend, Sasha Chermayeff, recounted that Johnâs dog, Hank, ran into traffic in Central Park in May 1994 and was struck by a car.
According to his friend Steven Gillon, he traveled to Los Angeles to bury a dog. While he was there, his motherâs health suddenly declined. He felt angry that Daryl had insisted he attend the dogâs funeral when his own mother was seriously ill with cancer.
In the movie Love Story, Jackie (played by Naomi Watts) leaves a voicemail for John while heâs flying, and then collapses at home. This scene was created to be dramatic, but itâs also meant to show just how ill she was after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkinâs lymphoma in December 1993. She passed away on May 19, 1994.
