*Warning – contains full spoilers for The Boys season 5 finale.*
After seven years and five seasons, the epic showdown between Homelander and Butcher has brought the story of The Boys to a close.
The season finale wrapped things up for many characters, though Soldier Boy’s fate remained unresolved – he’s still frozen after his battle with Homelander.
So, what exactly went down? What became of the former members of The Seven, and how did things turn out for The Boys? Most importantly, did Homelander ever face the consequences of his actions?
Read on for everything you need to know about the ending of The Boys season 5.
The Boys ending explained: What happened to Sister Sage?

The finale of The Boys began with the team mourning Frenchie’s death, worried that his sacrifice hadn’t made a difference. Kimiko still hadn’t shown any sign of gaining the power to neutralize Soldier Boy.
Knowing she needed to feel rage to trigger her ability, Butcher prompted Sage to insult Frenchie and everything he’d accomplished. This outburst of anger from Kimiko immediately stripped Sage of her powers.
Having realized he wasn’t the most knowledgeable one present, Sage chose to skip the group’s last task and instead went to a Harry Potter-themed event.
What happened to Oh Father?

Homelander was getting ready to deliver a major address on Easter Sunday from the Oval Office. After he announced he was a god, psychics were stationed to eliminate anyone who didn’t believe him.
For a last attempt to stop him, the team entered the White House through a network of underground tunnels. Although security was ready for them, Ashley was able to help them bypass the defenses and get inside.
When they arrived, the team confronted Deep and Oh Father. Starlight led Deep away from the building to fight him alone, while Hughie and Mother’s Milk kept Oh Father busy, allowing Butcher and Kimiko to reach Homelander.
While Hughie fought Oh Father, MM snuck up and forcefully placed a heavy-duty ball-gag—one Ashley had purchased—into his mouth. Just as Oh Father unleashed a massive scream, the sound was contained by the gag, causing his head to explode.
What happened to The Deep?

I was completely floored watching the scene where Starlight confronted The Deep on the beach. She was desperately trying to get him to see reason, to realize Homelander was using and genuinely despised him. She laid it all out, hoping to sway him, but honestly, The Deep just wouldn’t listen. He was completely stuck on staying loyal, despite everything.
He was ultimately thrown into the ocean, where, as foreshadowed in the previous episode, he faced a brutal attack from an octopus, sharks, and other sea creatures – payback for his actions involving the pipeline. He died a fitting death, sinking to the ocean floor, leaving only a bloodstain on the surface.
What happened to Homelander?

Even before the Boys arrived, Homelander was falling apart, publicly revealing his disdain for ordinary people and his intention to eliminate those who didn’t support him.
When I finally saw Butcher and Kimiko confront him, it was insane – a full-on fight, broadcast live for everyone to watch! Then Ryan showed up to back them up, which was a huge relief. But the really cool part was this flashback of Frenchie that helped Kimiko understand something amazing: her powers weren’t just about getting angry, they came from her heart and what she cared about. It was a really powerful moment.
She stripped Homelander, Butcher, and Ryan of their powers. Homelander tried to fly, but couldn’t, leaving him helpless. Butcher quickly gained the upper hand, brutally attacking him in memory of Frenchie.
Homelander, completely broken and begging for his life, was brutally killed by Butcher, who drove a crowbar through his skull. Butcher declared the act was revenge for Becca.
Finally, the nightmare was over, and Homelander was dead.
What happened to Ashley and Stan Edgar?

Honestly, after Homelander was finally gone, Ashley – who’d become President after Calhoun – really tried to spin things. She insisted she wasn’t going anywhere, claimed she was the one who actually stopped Homelander, and acted like she hadn’t done a single thing wrong. It was frustrating to watch her try to take credit and avoid accountability.
Congress disagreed, and she was removed from office and arrested.
Stan Edgar was put back in charge of Vought, and despite Homelander’s absence, the misuse of power by superpowered individuals and their exploitation for profit continued unchecked.
What happened to Butcher?

Following Homelander’s death, Butcher suggested he and Ryan begin a new life together. Ryan refused, explaining that he wasn’t choosing sides – he saw both Butcher and Homelander as flawed individuals, and simply wanted to move forward on his own.
Butcher was already upset about the rejection, but he began to see Ryan was right. Then, he received even worse news: his beloved dog, Terror, had passed away peacefully.
He quietly left while the others were watching TV, taking the virus with him. He went directly to Vought Tower, but Hughie figured out what he was up to and went after him.
When Hughie got there, he discovered Butcher had loaded the virus into the building’s sprinklers and set it to activate. Butcher’s plan was to wait until the Supes were moving around, then release the virus, hoping it would spread globally and eliminate all Supes.
Hughie didn’t want that to occur, and in a struggle, he shot Butcher in the stomach, seeing a resemblance to his brother, Leonard, in the moment.
As Butcher was dying with Hughie holding him, he told Hughie he admired him for staying true to his good nature and not becoming someone he wasn’t. He accepted Hughie’s choices and felt calm as he passed away.
What happened to Hughie, Starlight, MM, Kimiko and Ryan?

Following Butcher’s funeral, the Boys each moved on with their lives. MM found love again with Monique, and Ryan stayed with him. Kimiko adopted a dog and relocated to France, where she often thought of Frenchie with sadness.
Hughie and Starlight started a new business together, an electronics store called Campbell Audio Visual. Shortly after, Bob Singer, who was back as President, offered Hughie the job of running the revived Bureau of Supe Affairs, but Hughie declined.
Starlight announced she was pregnant, and she and Hughie decided to name their baby Robin, in memory of Hughie’s former girlfriend who tragically died in the first episode. As Starlight returned to fighting crime, soaring into the sky to help others, Hughie watched with a newfound sense of happiness and peace.
The episode concluded with a heartwarming look behind the scenes, celebrating the team and bidding farewell to the show. Over five seasons, it consistently entertained, amused, and sometimes even shocked us, all in equal measure.
