‘We’re Not Standing Still’: Returnal Director Forms New Studio to Make Games That Trust You

Harry Krueger, who directed Returnal and has worked at Housemarque for 14 years, has revealed he’s starting a new team.

The newly formed studio, Cosmic Division, is developing its debut game – a story-driven, single-player experience focused on compelling gameplay. The game is planned for release on both PC and consoles, meaning a PlayStation version is likely, potentially even for the PS6 by the time it launches.

Krueger expressed his gratitude for Housemarque, the team behind the recent release of Saros. He noted that their collaboration was instrumental in building the foundation for his new studio.

Now the CEO of Cosmic Division, Krueger says the team aims to expand on their past successes by exploring new concepts, bringing in new people, and focusing on games with enduring qualities that respect players and create memorable experiences.

The studio has initial funding and is now seeking partners and creative individuals to join the project. According to Krueger, they’ve established a strong base and are ready to embark on an ambitious and imaginative journey, exploring the universe and everything beyond it.

Cosmic Division’s first project suggests they might create games similar to those made by Housemarque. Housemarque has always prioritized fun gameplay, and recently started adding strong stories with games like Returnal and Saros. It’s still unclear if Cosmic Division will also use a rogue-like game structure, but their approach seems comparable.

Harry Krueger started working at Housemarque in 2010 with the game Dead Nation. He went on to contribute to several other popular titles, including Resogun, Alienation, Matterfall, Nex Machina, and Returnal, and was also involved in the initial stages of development for Saros.
