UK MPs write to Channel 4 over Married At First Sight UK “serious” allegations

Members of Parliament on the Culture, Media and Sport Committee have contacted Channel 4 and Ofcom to express their concerns about how the network and regulator handled serious claims made about the reality TV show, Married At First Sight UK.

This follows accusations made after a BBC Panorama program aired on Monday, May 18th. One woman claimed her co-star engaged in sexual misconduct during filming, and two other women anonymously reported they were raped.

The letter sent to Channel 4 requests information about how they handle complaints from people who appear on the show. It also asks what steps were taken to investigate the recent claims and details about the review Channel 4 has announced.

As a big reality TV fan, I’m also really concerned about how the network looks after the people who appear on their shows. It makes you wonder if they’re doing enough to support contestants, not just on this particular show, but across the board.

The letter to Ofcom questions what part the broadcasting regulator plays when people file complaints, and what authority it has to look into possible violations of broadcasting rules.

The letter also inquires with Ofcom about when they plan to start their investigation into the claims.

Dame Caroline Dinenage, who leads the Commons Media Select Committee, has expressed worry about the claims surrounding Married At First Sight. She stated that the allegations are disturbing and question if current safeguards are sufficient to protect participants in reality TV shows.

“Both Channel 4 and Ofcom, as the broadcasting regulator, have urgent questions to answer.”

The reality TV show Married at First Sight, known in countries like Australia and the US, features couples who meet for the very first time at their wedding. They then go on a honeymoon and try living together as a married couple.

Channel 4 revealed on Monday that it launched an independent investigation last month to examine the well-being of people who participated in one of its shows. This came after receiving serious concerns about how a few former participants were treated.

Following the allegations, the broadcaster has removed all episodes of Married at First Sight UK from both its streaming platform and regular TV channels.

Channel 4 released a statement saying they received serious claims in April about misconduct by a few former participants. These participants have reportedly denied the allegations.

The channel respects the privacy of everyone who contributes and has a responsibility to care for them. Because of this, we can’t discuss or reveal any details about the claims that have been made.

Following the allegations, Channel 4 was asked about concerns regarding its support for participants. Channel 4 maintains that it responded quickly and appropriately to any welfare concerns raised through its established procedures, using the information it had at the time.

“Channel 4 strongly refutes any claim to the contrary.”
