Cartoon Network Crossover Honors Beloved Voice Actor

The animation community recently lost Tom Kane, a beloved voice actor known for his work on popular Cartoon Network shows like The Powerpuff Girls, Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, and Star Wars. He passed away following complications from a stroke, and fans and colleagues are remembering his significant impact on animation. Animator Craig McCracken, a close friend of Kane’s, shared his grief online and announced a special crossover featuring characters from two of his most famous creations as a tribute.

Animator Craig McCracken recently shared a new Instagram post featuring Professor Utonium from The Powerpuff Girls and Mr. Harriman from Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends, both characters voiced by the late Tom Kane. In the post, McCracken reminisced about first hearing Kane’s voice 29 years ago during an audition. He described being immediately impressed by Kane’s deep, warm, and humorous delivery, recalling a funny moment when Kane reacted enthusiastically to a mention of the Blue Meanies, confirming to McCracken that he was a truly special talent. The new artwork is included in the post.

Honoring Tom Kane

McCracken fondly remembered his friend, noting their 12 seasons working together on cartoons, especially Tom’s memorable portrayal of the dignified Mr. Herriman. Having grown up without a father, McCracken valued Tom as a father figure for his own children, seeing his characters as representing body, mind, and spirit, while Tom embodied the heart of the family – both in his voice acting and as a person. Tom’s home was always full of children and animals, and McCracken described him as one of the most generous and loving people he’d ever known. He expressed eternal gratitude for Tom’s voice and spirit living on through his characters, ending with a final thank you and farewell.

Many fans remember Frank Kane for his iconic roles as Yoda in Star Wars and in classic Cartoon Network shows. However, he also lent his voice to numerous other popular animated series, including The Legend of Korra, Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, Archer, and The Wild Thornberrys. His final performance was reprising the role of Yoda for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga. Frank Kane’s contributions to entertainment will be deeply missed and remembered by both fans and those who worked with him.
