Masters of the Universe Stars & Director Tease Sequel Plans, “So Many Characters to Introduce”

The live-action Masters of the Universe movie, starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man, came out in the summer of 1987, but unfortunately, it wasn’t a success in theaters. Although He-Man’s popularity had waned by then, the filmmakers still hoped to launch a franchise, ending the movie with a hint that the villain Skeletor would return. That sequel never happened, but over the years, many have tried to reboot the series, hoping to appeal to both longtime fans and a new audience.

This summer, Masters of the Universe is making a comeback, and it’s expected to please both longtime fans and attract new ones. The filmmakers, like those who created the original, are already thinking about the future of the franchise. In a recent interview with ComicBook, director Travis Knight and stars Nicholas Galitzine (He-Man) and Camila Mendes (Teela) shared their enthusiasm for a potential sequel to the film.

He-Man Team Ready for Masters of the Universe Sequel

Galitzine was particularly drawn to He-Man’s appearances in DC comics, praising the artwork. He was also fascinated by exploring the impact of immense power on a person. He feels Adam, as a character, is very emotional and provides many avenues for exploring how power affects someone’s ethics, as briefly shown in the movie with the theme of excessive pride. The potential for diverse storylines and new characters makes the project particularly exciting.

Camila Mendes, who plays Teela, immediately responded to a hint about a possible storyline in the new film. She mentioned that she and her co-star, Morena Baccarin, had discussed the connection between their characters, even though the movie doesn’t directly explore it.

Mendes praised Travis’s casting choice, saying it showed a smart, forward-thinking approach. He’s particularly interested in seeing how the show develops the complex relationships between the character and her father, Adam, and also how it delves into Teela’s connection with the Sorceress.

Travis Knight, the filmmaker behind the successful Bumblebee movie, saw Masters of the Universe as another opportunity to bring a classic 1980s franchise back to life. He described working on the film as a deeply enjoyable experience, and feels that positive energy translates to the final movie.

Knight hinted at the potential for future Masters of the Universe projects, saying there’s a vast world and many stories to explore with these characters. He emphasized that the team put their all into this movie and would be satisfied if it stands alone, but they’re open to continuing the franchise if fans want more.
