Three Years Ago, Dragon Ball Z Set a Record It’s Never Going to Break

Dragon Ball Z is a hugely popular and recognizable anime. Even people who haven’t watched the show are often familiar with its characters and stories. This popularity extends to collectible items, with figurines, art, and other merchandise becoming highly sought after.

Because Dragon Ball Z has become so popular and well-known, its collectibles have steadily increased in value. Just three years ago, a Dragon Ball Z item sold for a record price at auction – a record that probably won’t be broken again.

Vegeta’s Greatest Moment Became Dragon Ball Z’s Biggest Sale

Last October, a single animation cell from Dragon Ball Z Season 4 fetched $144,000 at a Heritage Auctions sale. This is the most money anyone has ever paid for Dragon Ball artwork—whether from the comic or the animated series—and it’s not surprising, as the cell depicts one of the most famous scenes in Dragon Ball Z.

The ‘Buu Saga’ in Dragon Ball Z is widely considered the series’ most incredible story arc and featured its biggest battle. Stopping Buu required huge sacrifices from many of the Z-Fighters. Early in the saga, during what’s known as the ‘Babidi Saga,’ there’s a surprising turn when Vegeta appears to return to his villainous ways, allowing Babidi, Buu’s creator, to bring out his evil side. Transformed into ‘Majin Vegeta,’ this change doesn’t ultimately stick, as Vegeta’s inherent goodness shines through. In a truly selfless act, Vegeta uses all his power in a massive explosion, sacrificing himself in a desperate attempt to defeat Buu and protect his loved ones and the Earth.

The final conversation between Majin Vegeta and Piccolo is a truly memorable scene in all of Dragon Ball. It beautifully highlights how far Vegeta had come in DBZ, evolving from a ruthless, villainous Saiyan into Goku’s strong ally and a powerful hero. It’s considered as significant as Goku’s first Super Saiyan transformation or Gohan’s incredible Super Saiyan 2 moment during his fight with Perfect Cell. Interestingly, a production image from the Gohan vs. Cell battle recently sold at auction for $11,000, while an image of Majin Vegeta fetched a much higher price of $144,000, demonstrating its greater collectibility.

It’s no surprise to dedicated Dragon Ball fans that Vegeta is arguably the most valuable player in the series. He’s a classic antihero—one of the most recognizable and beloved—and truly deserves the praise he gets.

I’m so excited to share that you can now watch Dragon Ball Z on Crunchyroll! And if you’re like me and love a good debate, come join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum – we’re talking about what many consider the most controversial anime of all time!
