After almost 40 years, a classic Nintendo game that was only available in Japan is finally being released worldwide. In the early days of video games, it wasn’t unusual for games to come out in Japan first, with other regions getting them later. Many games appeared on the Japanese NES (known as the Famicom) long before anywhere else, and some never made it out of Japan because publishers didn’t think it would be profitable to translate and release them. Now, a game from a lesser-known series is unexpectedly coming to modern consoles.
This week marks the first Western release of Toujinmakyouden Hercules no eikou, a classic RPG originally launched on the NES/Famicom in 1987. It was the first game in a series that became quite popular, with several sequels appearing on the Super Nintendo and Game Boy. However, those sequels never made it outside of Japan. The only exception was Glory of Heracles, which was released in North America for the Nintendo DS in 2010.
For the first time ever, the classic game Toujinmakyouden Hercules no Eikou is being released outside of Japan, thanks to publisher Hamster and their Console Archives series. It arrives digitally on the PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop this week, on May 21st, and will cost $7.99. This new version includes extras like additional save points, a rewind feature, and screen filters to recreate the look of the original game on older CRT televisions.
Toujinmakyouden Hercules no Eikou is a role-playing game where you play as Hercules on a quest to defeat the Demon King Hades and save the goddess Venus, who has been captured and taken to the underworld. The game challenges you to overcome obstacles, battle monsters, and ultimately rescue Venus.
It’s fantastic that Hamster is making obscure games like Toujinmakyouden Hercules no eikou available to a wider audience. With their Console Archives program, hopefully, we’ll see even more previously Japan-only titles released in English-speaking regions for the first time.
