After 9 Years, American Horror Story Confirms Its Iconic Killer Clown Is Returning in New Episodes

Because each season of American Horror Story features a new story, characters you loved wouldn’t return in subsequent seasons. However, the show eventually revisited popular characters, bringing them back for a crossover season – the eighth installment, American Horror Story: Apocalypse. Now, production is underway on the long-awaited Season 13, which promises to bring back some beloved actors who haven’t been seen in nearly ten years, and appears to be another crossover season, revisiting familiar faces and storylines.

Season 13 of American Horror Story is bringing back some familiar faces – Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters, Angela Bassett, and Jessica Lange – and now the cast is growing! According to Deadline, Mena Suvari (known for American Beauty) and Berto Colón (The Night Agent) are joining the new season. Plus, two actors from American Horror Story: Freak Show will reprise their roles: Matt Fraser as Paul the Illustrated and John Carroll Lynch as the terrifying clown, Twisty.

American Horror Story Confirms Twist the Clown’s Return

Creepy clowns are common in horror, but American Horror Story didn’t feature one until Season 4. The season, titled “Freak Show,” introduces Twisty the Clown, played by John Carroll Lynch, as a frightening serial killer who targets unkind adults and vulnerable couples in Florida. What sets Twisty apart from other killer clowns like Pennywise is that his story evokes sympathy; despite his terrifying appearance, he still believes his purpose is to entertain and help children.

Twisty immediately became a popular character when he first appeared in Freak Show. As viewers learned more about his past, it became clear he was much more complex than just a simple imitation of Jason Voorhees with red hair. He was a key part of Season 4 and even returned in the all-clown season, American Horror Story: Cult. His popularity led to a comic book series called Twisty: The Clown Chronicles, which was successful enough to inspire a line of action figures. The character even made a ghostly appearance in one episode, haunting someone years after his death on the show.

It’s still unknown exactly what role Twisty the Clown will play in the next season of American Horror Story, but because he’s become a legendary figure within the show’s overall story, bringing him back should be seamless. He won’t be the only familiar face – Sarah Paulson, Angela Bassett, Emma Roberts, and others are confirmed to return as their characters from AHS: Coven. There’s also buzz that Jessica Lange might reprise her role as Constance Langdon from the very first season. While it’s not being called a crossover, Season 13 of American Horror Story is already generating a lot of excitement and is looking to be one of the most anticipated seasons in years. With a release planned for Fall 2026, expect to see Twisty featured prominently in promotional materials.
