When Darth Vader first appeared in A New Hope, it wasn’t clear if a person was even inside that suit, let alone that we’d eventually learn the full story of Anakin Skywalker. One of the most surprising things revealed over the years is just how young Anakin was during all the events in the Star Wars films and TV series.
Darth Vader’s age has become a big discussion among fans, especially after his recent appearance in Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord, where he looked surprisingly young for the time period. This has led many to wonder: how old was Vader throughout his various appearances in Star Wars films and shows?
Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace

Even though Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader first appeared in A New Hope when the films were originally released, his story actually begins in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace. This first film surprisingly showed him as a kind, innocent nine-year-old boy, rather than the troubled or villainous figure he later becomes.
The movie introduces us to a young Anakin Skywalker on the desert planet Tatooine, where Qui-Gon Jinn finds him and brings him to the Jedi Order to start his Jedi training. This showed audiences Anakin’s life much earlier than they expected, though the next film, Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones, moved his story closer to what many fans had initially imagined.
Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones

I always found it fascinating how much time passes between The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. It’s almost unbelievable to realize that Anakin is a full ten years older in the second film – nineteen years old, and still learning as a Padawan! That big jump also explains why a different actor plays him. I remember being surprised when Hayden Christensen took over the role from Jake Lloyd, but it makes perfect sense considering how much Anakin has grown up.
Even though Anakin was very young during the events of this movie, he made some huge choices. From killing the Tusken Raiders to marrying Padmé, he changed a lot – and unfortunately, these changes showed he was starting down a dangerous path towards becoming a villain.
Star Wars: The Clone Wars

The animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars takes place between the films Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith, but surprisingly wasn’t released until 2008—three years after Revenge of the Sith came out. Despite this delay, the series became a significant part of the Star Wars saga, especially in exploring Anakin Skywalker’s journey and his descent into darkness.
Over seven seasons, the show follows Anakin Skywalker as he grows from age 19 to 22, ending right before he turns to the dark side and becomes Darth Vader.
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith

Revenge of the Sith is a crucial part of Anakin Skywalker’s Star Wars journey, second in importance only to Return of the Jedi, where he ultimately finds redemption. In this film, Anakin completely gives in to the dark side, plays a key role in the execution of Order 66, suffers the loss of Padmé (partly due to his own choices), and battles Obi-Wan Kenobi, leading to the injuries that confine him to the Darth Vader suit we all know.
Because Revenge of the Sith shows some of the most important moments in Anakin’s life, it’s surprising to learn he was only 22 years old during these events. That means he was essentially a college student when he turned to the dark side and suffered such great losses.
Star Wars: Maul – Shadow Lord

The latest Star Wars series, Maul – Shadow Lord, is set only a year after Revenge of the Sith. This means Darth Vader was just 23 years old during the events of the show, a fact that’s been getting a lot of attention and discussion online because it’s surprising to many fans.
Darth Vader is incredibly frightening in the show—even just his breathing is enough to scare everyone around him, and viewers too! (Especially when he starts forcefully dragging people through the forest while they scream.) It’s surprising to learn that, despite being so powerful and evil, he’s still only in his early twenties.
Obi-Wan Kenobi

The series Obi-Wan Kenobi brought Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen back together on screen, continuing the story 10 years after Revenge of the Sith. This makes Darth Vader around 32 years old during the show, which is a fascinating age for his character because it highlights the two conflicting sides of him.
As a huge Star Wars fan, it’s funny to me how the Darth Vader suit instantly makes you think of someone way older than he actually was for most of the original trilogy. Even seeing a young Anakin in the suit in Revenge of the Sith doesn’t totally shake that impression. But then you watch scenes like the one where his mask is broken and he’s yelling at Obi-Wan, and he genuinely feels… childish, almost like the petulant Anakin we saw in the prequels. It’s a weird contrast!
Star Wars Rebels

While Darth Vader isn’t a central character in Star Wars Rebels, his presence—and that of the Empire and Palpatine—is felt throughout the series. He has several important scenes, especially those involving his confrontation with Ahsoka Tano. The episodes “Twilight of the Apprentice Part 1” and “Part 2” mark the first time Ahsoka and Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader meet since the events leading up to Order 66.
The series Rebels is set 14 to 18 years after Revenge of the Sith, placing Anakin Skywalker (as Darth Vader) in his late 30s to early 40s during the show’s events – around 36 to 40 years old. This timeline aligns with the original trilogy, where Vader appears to be in his early 40s, as it immediately follows the events of Rebels.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

Vader appears briefly in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, but a particular scene—often called the “Hallway Scene”—is especially memorable for showcasing one of his most frightening moments in the entire Star Wars saga.
It’s confirmed that Rogue One takes place right before the original Star Wars trilogy—the movie actually ends right as A New Hope begins. This means Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader is around 41 years old during the events of Rogue One.
A New Hope

As we’ve discussed, Rogue One directly connects to A New Hope, establishing that Darth Vader is 41 years old in both films. Originally, it was hard to reconcile the menacing image of Vader with the idea of him being a man in his early forties. However, knowing that he’s Luke Skywalker’s father makes it much easier to visualize now.
Back when the first Star Wars movie came out, nobody – not even George Lucas – realized that Darth Vader was Luke and Leia’s father. But considering how old the twins were in A New Hope, 41 doesn’t seem like such a surprising age for Vader anymore.
The Empire Strikes Back

Three years elapse between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back, making Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader around 44 years old during the events of the second film. This is a pivotal moment for Vader, as learning Luke is his son begins to affect him, though he isn’t yet ready to turn against Palpatine.
Despite being only 44 years old, Vader was nearing the end of his life by the time that movie finished, which was unfortunate for his character.
Return of the Jedi

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader is still technically alive in the final Star Wars film, Return of the Jedi, which is where he ultimately dies after being both a Jedi and a Sith. Since Return of the Jedi happens roughly a year after The Empire Strikes Back, Anakin was only 45 years old when he passed away.
Despite his death, Anakin Skywalker’s story isn’t truly over, thanks to his connection to the Force. He’s actually appeared in one story that takes place after he died.
Ahsoka

Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vader last appeared in the first season of Ahsoka, making two appearances throughout the season. His first appearance was within a mysterious place called the World Between Worlds, the nature of which remains unclear. However, his final appearance, shown at the very end of the season, was definitively confirmed to be the real Darth Vader.
At the very end of the season, Anakin Skywalker appears as a Force Ghost on Peridea. While he’s deceased and therefore doesn’t age, had he still been alive, he would have been around 52 or 53 years old during the events of Ahsoka.
