Magneto first appeared in the very first issue of The X-Men back in 1963, alongside Professor X and the original team. From the start, he was established as the most dangerous and enduring enemy of the X-Men. But over time, Magneto became a more complex character. As a Holocaust survivor, he witnessed the worst of human behavior and understandably struggled to trust people. This history has led him to act as both a villain and a hero, though he’s never fully overcome his deep-seated distrust.
Over the years, Marvel writers have frequently explored the idea of Magneto succeeding in his goals. These stories often feature incredibly powerful iterations of the character.
7) X-Men: Red’s Magneto

The 2022 comic series X-Men: Red, written by Al Ewing and illustrated by Stefano Caselli, continued storylines established by Jonathan Hickman’s reimagining of the X-Men. The series followed Magneto after he led the effort to make Mars habitable. He then left the Quiet Council to live on Arakko, where he joined Storm and the Brotherhood of Arakko to protect the planet from both outside dangers and internal conflicts. Though a powerful leader, Magneto was ultimately killed by Uranos the Undying, who tore out his heart. Notably, Magneto had previously destroyed any backups of his consciousness, ensuring this death would be permanent – a rare occurrence for the character in Marvel Comics.
6) Days of Future Past Magneto

In Days of Future Past, a bleak future unfolded where Sentinels—robots designed to hunt mutants—had seized control. This happened after a plot to assassinate a senator led to the Sentinels being unleashed and ultimately overthrowing the U.S. government and eliminating nearly all superpowered individuals. Magneto, though using a wheelchair, was among the few mutants who remained and led the resistance. Notably, he stepped into the role of protector that Professor X usually filled. Though heroes like Wolverine and Colossus perished, Magneto lived on and built a new X-Men team alongside Kate Pryde in this devastated world.
5) “Age of Apocalypse” Magneto

The “Age of Apocalypse” storyline began when Legion, Professor X’s son, went back in time intending to kill Magneto before he could harm his father. But Professor X stepped in and saved Magneto, which erased Legion from existence and dramatically altered the future. In this new reality, Magneto created the X-Men, trying to fulfill Xavier’s vision, but he wasn’t as effective a leader. This allowed Apocalypse to take over the world. Despite this, Magneto remained incredibly powerful, and in a climactic battle depicted in X-Men: Omega, he defeated Apocalypse by using his full magnetic abilities to tear him apart, ending the villain’s reign.
4) Earth X Magneto

Published in 1999-2000, Earth X is a Marvel limited series created by Jim Krueger, Alex Ross, and John Paul Leon. It’s set on Earth-9997, where a mysterious event called the Terrigen Mists caused widespread mutations. This leads Magneto to intensify his efforts to protect ordinary mutants. He cleverly uses the Sentinels to construct Sentinel City, a secure haven for mutants in the Savage Land, taking advantage of the area’s iron-rich air to create powerful wind-based weapons. During the story, Magneto temporarily loses his powers, and Toad gains strength, but Magneto ultimately recovers his abilities and fully forgives Toad, completing a journey of personal growth.
3) Krakoa Magneto

During the Krakoa era, Magneto’s true power didn’t come from his ability to control metal, but from his influence and the knowledge he possessed. As a member of the ruling Quiet Council, he and Professor X were the only ones who understood the real reasons behind Krakoa’s founding. They strategically appointed allies to the Council to maintain their control. Beyond his political strength, Magneto demonstrated an incredible feat of power by drawing a huge iron asteroid from space and using it to jumpstart the terraforming of Mars, eventually creating Planet Arakko.
2) Ultimate Magneto

The Magneto from the Ultimate Universe was unique among all versions of the character. He went much further than any other, committing widespread murder and even killing his old friend, Charles Xavier. In his world, he actively sought to wipe out humanity, building a powerful group of villains known as the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, originating from the Savage Land. He was even strong enough to defeat the Ultimates team, with help from Thor. However, his most devastating acts occurred during the ‘Ultimatum’ storyline, where he killed Xavier and then used his magnetic abilities to control Thor’s hammer, Mjolnir, reversing Earth’s magnetic poles. This created a catastrophic event called the Ultimatum Wave, resulting in more deaths – of both ordinary people and heroes – than any other Magneto has ever caused.
1) House of M Magneto

The most powerful Magneto appeared during the “House of M” story arc, and surprisingly, it wasn’t due to his mutant abilities. When Quicksilver discovered the Avengers and X-Men were planning to eliminate the Scarlet Witch, he alerted her. She then used her powers to reshape reality, creating a world where mutants ruled and her family was in charge. This was the only time Magneto achieved global dominance, with the world molded to his ideals. However, he quickly realized this new world was created by magic, not his own power, which frustrated him. This led to a confrontation where he killed Quicksilver, triggering another outburst from the Scarlet Witch. She declared, “No more mutants,” effectively ending the storyline and reverting reality. No other incarnation of Magneto has ever held such immense power.
