Mandy Moore’s Rare Comment About Being “Betrothed” to Ex Ryan Adams

This is Mandy Moore looking back at her marriage to Ryan Adams.

Mandy Moore recently shared a sweet story about how her husband, Taylor Goldsmith, asked her father for her hand in marriage before they got engaged in 2017. She said her father was very touched by Taylor’s thoughtful request.

She revealed on the May 19th episode of the This Is Us podcast, which she co-hosts with her former co-stars Sterling K. Brown and Chris Sullivan, that she’d been previously engaged, but the proposal hadn’t followed proper etiquette – the suitor hadn’t asked her father for permission. She believes her father was especially pleased that this time, the proposal was done the traditional way, as he really values those customs.

Mandy added that he seemed really awkward too. Apparently, when Taylor told her the story, he said something like, ‘Oh my gosh, you didn’t even need to ask!’

Oh my gosh, Mandy and Ryan! I was so thrilled when they got married back in 2009 – they seemed absolutely perfect together after dating for two years. Honestly, my heart broke when I heard they were separating after almost six years of marriage. It was so sad, and the divorce was finally official in 2016. I still think about them sometimes, it was just… devastating.

I’ve been following Mandy Moore for years, and I was really interested in her latest podcast. While she didn’t say Ryan Adams’ name directly, she definitely talked about their relationship – both as a couple and working together – and how it used to be. She’s been pretty honest about it all in the past, and it was good to hear her reflect on it again.

She described feeling overwhelmed and hopeless, sharing on the WTF podcast with Marc Maron in 2019 that the situation was impossible to continue. She felt incredibly isolated and sad, even while with him, and realized he wasn’t the person she was meant to spend her life with – or the person she was meant to be herself.

That year, Mandy joined other female musicians in publicly criticizing Ryan, detailing how he had negatively affected their careers and alleging he used manipulative tactics.

She explained in a New York Times interview that he used music to exert control. He frequently told her she wasn’t a true musician simply because she didn’t play an instrument.

Mandy explained that his controlling actions prevented her from building important relationships in her field during her twenties, a time when she could have significantly advanced her career.

Ryan first denied doing anything wrong, but he later apologized for his behavior.

In a 2020 letter, he expressed deep regret for how he had treated others during his life and career. He simply stated, “I’m sorry.” He explained that time spent alone allowed him to reflect and understand the need for major personal changes.

Mandy became a mother after marrying Taylor in 2018. They have three children: sons Gus, 5, and Ozzie, 3, and daughter Lou, who is 20 months old. Mandy frequently compliments Taylor’s abilities as a father.

He’s an amazing dad, husband, and partner! Juggling two energetic toddlers and a demanding job is tough, especially while I’m home with Lou, but he makes it look effortless. I’m so thankful to have him – I couldn’t do this with anyone else. So grateful for you, T!

In an Instagram post honoring Taylor, Mandy wrote that she always knew he’d be a good dad – he was even writing songs about coaching Little League before they got married! But she added that she was still amazed by how naturally gifted and wonderful he was once they actually became parents.

I’m constantly amazed by everything you do – your patience, kindness, and how you always jump in to help, whether it’s changing diapers, comforting a crying baby, or keeping up with our energetic toddler, all without me even needing to ask. You’re also a master at getting Gus to eat and always make Ozzie laugh. And your music choices for the boys are incredible… I could list countless other things!

Mandy shared on Instagram in February 2023 that they celebrated her partner, Gus Goldsmith’s, birthday early with loved ones. She wrote that two years with Gus have passed quickly and expressed how lucky they feel to have him in their lives.

The actress from This Is Us confidently wears heels, even if it makes her taller than her partner – a truly inspiring couple!

The couple enjoyed a mini-vacay in San Francisco to see an iconic landmark.

Oh my gosh, Ed Sheeran gets me! He’s basically saying I want to be that close, tucked away safely with you, like in the pocket of your jeans! And Taylor… she understands too! She thinks of keeping me as something precious, marking your place in a story… it’s just… perfect. They get it, you know? It’s all about wanting to be a little piece of your everyday life.
