After facing criticism for limiting how players can eliminate creatures in Subnautica 2, the game’s developer, Unknown Worlds, has released an open letter to its community. The letter responds to player feedback and explains their approach to creature balance, combat, and the game’s Early Access release.
Okay, so the devs have heard us loud and clear – some of the creatures are just way too aggressive and it’s more annoying than fun when we run into them. They’re working on fixing this right now! They’re tweaking how the creatures act – things like when they decide to attack, how far they’ll chase you, and how they mess with your base or vehicles. Plus, they’re making our tools, like flares and the Survival Tool, actually useful against them. Hopefully, this will make encounters more exciting and less rage-inducing!
Look, I get why some of us want to just fight the creatures in this game. The developers have said they never really set out to make it a combat-focused experience, though. They think a lot of the requests for ways to kill stuff actually come from feeling like we can’t avoid or deal with creatures effectively enough. And they want to be clear – they’re not judging anyone who wants to fight, they just had a different vision for how we’d interact with the wildlife.
Look, we’re not trying to punish players who want more action, and we definitely don’t think they’re wrong for wanting it! Subnautica has always been about feeling vulnerable while you explore and try to survive, not about blasting things with weapons. That’s what makes it special, in our opinion. But that only works if running into creatures feels balanced, makes sense, and is actually fun. Honestly, we know we still have a lot of work to do to get there.
Regarding the initial release of Subnautica 2 as an Early Access title, the developers at Unknown Worlds want to make it clear this isn’t just a long-term bug-testing phase. They envision it as a partnership with players to help refine and improve the game. While they won’t be able to implement every suggestion from the community, they are committed to actively listening to feedback, clearly explaining their choices, and demonstrating how player input is directly influencing the game’s development.
The developers of Subnautica 2 plan to release updates with general improvements, showing they’re listening to player feedback. They hope this will demonstrate their commitment to collaborating with the community during the game’s development.
A recent update for Subnautica 2 addressed bugs and crashes, particularly for players with AMD graphics cards. The developers also announced they’re updating the game’s Terms of Service and adding a new FAQ to answer player questions and concerns about the existing terms and user agreement.
Subnautica 2 is available on PC and Xbox Series X/S. Take a look at our review for more details.
