Quentin Tarantino’s First Movie in 7 Years Officially Delayed (But for a Very Exciting Reason)

It’s been seven years since Quentin Tarantino’s last movie, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), but fans won’t have to wait much longer for new content from the director…sort of. While we still await his tenth and likely final film, Tarantino wrote a script for a sequel focusing on Brad Pitt’s character, Cliff Booth. Called The Adventures of Cliff Booth, the project brings Pitt back together with director David Fincher. Netflix even teased the movie with a Super Bowl ad earlier this year, suggesting a 2024 release. Now, a firm release timeframe has been confirmed.

There was talk that The Adventures of Cliff Booth would be released in the summer, similar to its previous film. However, audiences will now get a dose of Tarantino and Fincher during the holiday season. Netflix has confirmed the movie will play exclusively in IMAX theaters for two weeks starting November 25th (the day before Thanksgiving), then it will begin streaming on December 23rd. This was originally the plan for Greta Gerwig’s Chronicles of Narnia reboot, but Netflix has since decided to give that film a wider theatrical release in early 2027.

The Adventures of Cliff Booth Is One of the Most Exciting Releases of the Holiday Season

The holiday season is packed with big movie releases, and this year is no exception. The biggest event is the battle between Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three, but there are many other films worth seeing. November brings The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Weeping and the new Disney animated film Hexed, while December includes Jumanji: Open World and Werwulf, alongside the Dune and Avengers face-off. Plus, with its recent addition, Netflix’s The Adventures of Cliff Booth is quickly becoming one of the most anticipated films of the season.

As a huge Tarantino fan, I think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is right up there with his best work. It just completely immerses you in the late 60s with so much style! Everyone was fantastic in it, but Brad Pitt as Cliff Booth really stood out to me. He totally deserved that Oscar – he’s just so effortlessly cool and captivating on screen. Honestly, a spinoff focusing on Cliff would be amazing, and with the team they’ve put together, I have a feeling it’s going to be incredible!

Quentin Tarantino and David Fincher have distinct filmmaking styles, and that’s what makes a potential Adventures of Cliff Booth project so appealing. It will be fascinating to see how their creative visions come together, and with Fincher directing, the film should feel unique and avoid simply repeating elements from previous work. Tarantino hasn’t made a direct sequel before – though Kill Bill is often considered two films – and he’d likely want Cliff Booth to offer something new. Letting Fincher take the lead should help achieve that, keeping the project inventive and engaging.

It’s exciting that Netflix is releasing The Adventures of Cliff Booth in IMAX. While it was expected the film would have some theatrical run to qualify for the Oscars – a requirement for potential awards consideration – securing a prime IMAX slot over Thanksgiving suggests Netflix strongly believes it will be a top contender this year. We’ll see if it expands to regular theaters, allowing more people to experience it on the big screen, but thankfully, a home release won’t be far behind.
