This week marked the end of The Boys with the release of its fifth and final season. (Be warned: spoilers ahead!) The finale delivered the expected chaos – lots of death, destruction, and shocking moments as several beloved characters met their end. The episode also included some unexpected twists, like Frenchie returning despite his apparent death, and significant roles for both Homelander’s son, Ryan, and a last-minute appearance by Giancarlo Esposito as Vought’s CEO, Stan Edgar.
Fans were surprised not to see Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott) in the finale of The Boys, especially since she hadn’t appeared since Season 3. Many hoped for a cameo. However, according to series creator Erik Kripke, while they discussed it with McElligott, she’s largely stepped back from acting and wasn’t available to film a scene. Kripke shared that they still keep in touch occasionally.
The Boys Considered a Queen Maeve Cameo for Series Finale

I was so excited when I heard they’d considered having Queen Maeve make a cameo! Apparently, it didn’t move past just being an idea, which is a shame. From what I understand, it was a really casual conversation – they asked the actress if she’d be interested, and she was incredibly gracious. She explained she was just too busy with other commitments to take on the role, but she sent her best to everyone involved. It was a really friendly exchange, even though it didn’t pan out.
The quick recap before the final episode of The Boys did feature Queen Maeve, leading some viewers to think she might reappear. However, that clip wasn’t intended as a hint about her return. It was actually used to remind the audience of her earlier conversations with Annie, which became relevant when she interacted with Marie Moreau (Jaz Sinclair) at the beginning of the episode. The showrunners used the Maeve clip to set up that specific scene, not to suggest she’d be back.
When McElligott’s character left The Boys at the end of Season 3, it turned out to be a surprisingly positive development for the show’s storyline. Unlike most characters on the series, she actually got a happy ending – escaping the country to be with her girlfriend, Elena, even after losing her powers in a fight with Soldier Boy. Ashley Barrett, surprisingly, helped make this happen, covering up her escape to protect her from Vought and Homelander.
Bringing Maeve back, even for a quick appearance, could have lessened the impact of her powerful exit. She earned a hopeful ending when it seemed impossible for anyone to achieve one, and the finale only offered that kind of closure to a few characters. You could even say Billy Butcher found peace in death, completing his story alongside Becca. Ultimately, keeping Maeve out of the finale was the best choice, even if it wasn’t the original plan.
