The show’s over-the-top depiction of high school makes it hard to connect with the characters or their experiences. Like many anime, it doesn’t feel like an accurate portrayal of what real high school is actually like.
Because many anime shows are made for teens, school settings are very common. Like other shows, anime often exaggerates what schools are really like, but it takes it to an extreme. While some shows might depict problems like drug use or neglectful staff, anime schools consistently portray far more dysfunctional and problematic environments.
Kunigigaoka Junior High School Creates a Toxic Atmosphere for Students
Kunigigaoka High School in Tokyo appears ideal, boasting a strong record of student success. However, beneath the surface lies a harsh reality. The series Assassination Classroom shows that the school deals with struggling students by quietly transferring them to a separate, lower-ranked class known as ‘Class E,’ maintaining its overall high success rate.
Class E isn’t a typical remedial class; it’s a neglected and isolated classroom located on a mountaintop, lacking even basic facilities. Students in Class E are openly discriminated against by the rest of the school, and the system seems designed for their failure. While Euphoria High may not always prioritize its students, it’s never before had to hire a teacher who is actually a monster – and whose job is to train them in assassination.
Hyakkaou Private Academy Is Filled With Worse People Than Sydney Sweeney’s Cassie
Hyakkaou Private Academy, featured in Kakegurui, is a school for the children of the wealthiest and most influential families. Traditional education and sports aren’t important there; instead, students are ranked by their social standing. The school believes that future leaders shouldn’t waste time on things like classes or clubs.
The biggest problem isn’t just that students gamble, it’s that it’s become their main focus, taking over their education. The school also has a cruel system where students who lose a lot of money and fall into debt are essentially treated as slaves. Despite its relaxed attitude, Euphoria High never pushed students to the point of losing their freedom and dignity.
Advanced Nurturing High School Forces Its Students to Deceive and Manipulate
The prestigious Advanced Nurturing High School, featured in Classroom of the Elite, focuses on pushing students through intense competition and manipulation instead of offering a typical, supportive learning environment. While the school claims a perfect job placement record, it raises the question of whether this success comes at too high a price.
The anime Classroom of the Elite portrays a school environment where students quickly become paranoid, untrustworthy, and overly focused on victory. The teachers and school system actively encourage students to betray, lie to, and control one another – only the most cunning and ruthless can thrive. Unlike Euphoria High, which also sees its share of scheming, the school itself doesn’t create or allow that behavior.
Hachimitsu Academy Has an In-Built Prison
Hachimitsu Academy seems like a typical school at first glance, but things are far from normal – that’s why the anime is called Prison School. Originally built for privileged young women, the academy has incredibly strict rules, even for small mistakes. When a few boys are accepted, they quickly find themselves isolated and unwelcome by the rest of the student population.
After being discovered spying on the girls’ bathing area, the boys are sent to a prison located on school grounds as punishment. There, they must endure difficult tasks, bizarre challenges, and strict penalties, all in hopes of earning their way back into regular school life. The students at this school are quite provocative, but they are nothing compared to the powerful and eccentric Underground Student Council featured in Prison School.
Yomiyama North Middle School Hosts a Supernatural Curse
Yomiyama North Middle School, often called Yomikita, is the setting for the frightening events in Another. Twenty-six years before the story begins, a beloved student in 9th grade, class 3, died. Instead of acknowledging his death, the students and teachers pretended he was still alive. This decision unknowingly triggered a supernatural curse known as the “Calamity.”
Every year, a spirit of someone who has died haunts the class, causing terrible and violent accidents that harm students and their families. The only way to break this curse is to completely ignore one living student, which maintains a delicate balance. However, inviting a supernatural curse that endangers students is definitely not a good idea.
Fumizuki Academy Provides Facilities Based on Academic Performance
Anime often features schools with strange exams, and Baka and Test‘s Fumizuki Academy is no different. At this school, students take an hour-long test where they can attempt as many questions as they like. Their scores decide which classroom they’ll be placed in – lower scores mean a basic, poorly equipped room.
On top of everything else, Baka and Test features a unique system where students summon beings to battle each other, with the power of those beings determined by their test scores. Classes can even compete in wars, and the winning class receives significant improvements. It’s implied that students with poor grades aren’t even worthy of basic amenities like decent seating in Baka and Test.
Honnouji Academy Is a Totalitarian Hell
Honnouji Academy in Kill la Kill isn’t a typical school; it’s a harsh, controlling system built on power and strict rules. The student council president rules with an iron fist, and students are simply trying to get by without facing severe consequences for any act of defiance.
Honnouji Academy uses harsh, almost military-style discipline that focuses more on control than education. Students are valued for what they can do, leading to a system where those who struggle are easily discarded. While Euphoria High certainly has its issues, it doesn’t compare to the extreme environment at Honnouji Academy.
Setouchi Keijo Training School Exploits Its Female Students’ Bodies
Setouchi Keijo Training School is famous for a unique and controversial sport called Keijo, not traditional academics. Keijo involves female students competing on small platforms, attempting to knock each other off using only their hips and chests. The school, and the anime it inspired, are criticized for centering around this overly sexualized competition.
The anime relies heavily on fan service, with overly exaggerated depictions of the female characters’ bodies. The students often feel like they’re being treated as objects for entertainment, rather than individuals. In contrast, Euphoria High has always avoided sexualizing its female students.
Students Leave Logic at Home Before Attending Gintama High School
The anime series Gintama: Mr. Ginpachi’s Zany Class takes place at Gintama High School, a school known for its lack of rules and chaotic students. Most of the mayhem is caused by their teacher, Ginpachi Sakata.
Let me tell you, Gintama High is wild. There’s a fight practically every day, and honestly, even the students who are trying to learn, like Shinpachi, have a rough time! Watching it all happen is hilarious, but actually being there? I think it would drive anyone crazy trying to keep up with all the craziness those characters get into. It’s a fun show, but definitely not a peaceful school!
Easton Magic Academy Offers Too Many Dangerous Challenges
I’ve heard about this academy – it’s where they train students to become incredibly powerful mages. It seems like it could have been just another school, but it’s special because it prepares people to become Divine Visionaries. These are the highest-ranking mages in the land, and they end up wielding a lot of power and influence.
I’m really excited about how our school rewards students with coins for doing well – it’s a great way to recognize hard work! But honestly, it’s also created a super competitive atmosphere, which isn’t always healthy. What’s even worse is that some students are trying to game the system, using their abilities to unfairly collect coins from others. This has led to some really dangerous rivalries, and unfortunately, things have escalated to the point of serious injuries and, tragically, even deaths. It’s a complex situation, and we need to find a way to balance achievement with safety and fairness.
