Will There Be a Mandalorian & Grogu 2 or The Mandalorian Season 4? Everything We Know

Just a month before the final movie in the Star Wars sequel trilogy, The Rise of Skywalker, hit theaters, Disney+ launched its streaming service. One of the first shows on Disney+ was The Mandalorian, the first live-action Star Wars television series. It quickly became a worldwide hit, largely thanks to the character Grogu, often called “Baby Yoda.” Since then, many new Star Wars TV shows have been made, but The Mandalorian was the original that started it all, running for three seasons. Now, Din Djarin and Grogu are returning this summer in The Mandalorian and Grogu, ending the long wait for new Star Wars adventures on the big screen.

With the new film set to release over Memorial Day weekend, Lucasfilm is currently focused on promoting The Mandalorian and Grogu and building excitement for its theatrical release. However, as with any popular franchise, fans are already curious about what’s next for Din Djarin and Grogu. Here’s a rundown of everything we know about their future adventures.

The Mandalorian Season 4 Became The Mandalorian and Grogu

Originally, the plan was for a fourth season of The Mandalorian. Jon Favreau had already written the scripts, but production was halted by the Hollywood strikes of 2023. While paused, Lucasfilm decided to focus on making Star Wars films again and asked Favreau about creating a Mandalorian movie instead. This led to Favreau and Dave Filoni abandoning the Season 4 scripts and starting fresh with a completely new story, eventually leading to The Mandalorian & Grogu.

The change in direction was essential because the project moved from being a continuation of a TV series—where viewers already knew the story—to a big movie release aimed at both dedicated fans and those new to the universe. Jon Favreau intended The Mandalorian and Grogu to be a complete story on its own, making it enjoyable even for people who hadn’t seen the original TV show.

Disney Is Unlikely To Return To The Mandalorian As A TV Show

With The Mandalorian beginning as a TV series and then getting a theatrical release, some viewers are questioning if it might return to television after The Mandalorian and Grogu film concludes its run. However, the chances of a fourth season of The Mandalorian happening are slim. Although Lucasfilm hasn’t officially ruled it out, and it would be unusual to switch back to TV after establishing Din Djarin and Grogu as movie stars, Disney’s changing focus suggests the show is unlikely to continue on the small screen.

Disney, after releasing a large number of Star Wars and Marvel shows on its streaming service at a rapid rate, seems to be slowing down. They reportedly told the creator of the show Andor that streaming isn’t proving successful, likely because the cost of making these shows has increased. While more Star Wars TV shows are still planned, Lucasfilm doesn’t appear to be focused on constantly producing live-action series like it was in recent years.

The Mandalorian & Grogu 2 Isn’t Directly Set Up, But Could Easily Happen

Originally, The Mandalorian and Grogu was planned as a single, complete movie, and the story reflects that. While some fans might have wanted it to tie more closely into the larger MandoVerse stories on TV, keeping it self-contained was the right choice. To make the film enjoyable for everyone, even those who haven’t seen the shows, it needed to stand on its own. Building towards future storylines could have confused viewers who weren’t already familiar with the world.

Just because The Mandalorian and Grogu is a self-contained story doesn’t mean we won’t see a sequel. Din Djarin and Grogu could definitely go on another adventure for the New Republic. A Mandalorian movie series could be structured like the classic Indiana Jones or James Bond films, with each movie telling a separate story. Whether or not that happens depends on how well the movie performs in theaters. While early predictions suggest a modest opening weekend for a Star Wars film, its reasonable production budget of $165 million could help it succeed. It doesn’t need to be a massive blockbuster to be considered a commercial success.

What’s Next For Star Wars After The Mandalorian & Grogu?

While fans are eager for updates on Din Djarin and Grogu, there’s still more Star Wars coming soon. Although Lucasfilm is currently pacing its television releases, new seasons of both Maul – Shadow Lord and Ahsoka are planned. Ahsoka season two is expected on Disney+ in 2027, and it’s currently the only live-action Star Wars series with a confirmed release – Lucasfilm hasn’t announced any other new shows yet.

The next Star Wars film, Starfighter, is planned to come out in May 2027, coinciding with the franchise’s 50th anniversary. Directed by Shawn Levy, Starfighter stands out for its cast, including Ryan Gosling and Amy Adams – a new approach for Star Wars that could attract a wider audience. Several other Star Wars projects are in the works, but they don’t have release dates yet. We likely will hear more about them at Star Wars Celebration 2027, where major announcements are expected.
