Netflix’s New 8-Part Series That’s ‘Stranger Things For Adults’ Is The Perfect Weekend Binge

As a huge sci-fi fan, I’ve been really enjoying how much Netflix is investing in the genre lately. Their newest show, an eight-episode series, feels like a grown-up version of Stranger Things. Honestly, Netflix has become a powerhouse for quality TV across all kinds of genres – some of their shows are genuinely among the best ever made. And they’ve really nailed sci-fi, with shows like Dark, Love, Death & Robots, and of course, Stranger Things – which remains one of their biggest hits, and a show I always recommend.

Although many enjoyed Stranger Things, some felt it didn’t quite live up to its mature themes, leading viewers to seek out similar shows with a bit more depth. Now, Netflix seems to have delivered just that with its new series, The Boroughs. Created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, The Boroughs also features the creators of Stranger Things, the Duffer Brothers, as executive producers.

Critics are really enjoying The Boroughs, giving it a 94% score on Rotten Tomatoes right after it came out. With only eight episodes, it’s ideal for a weekend binge. The show features a captivating mystery and characters you can connect with, even though they’re older. Many viewers are calling it a more mature take on the popular series Stranger Things.

The Boroughs Is An Adult & More Obscure Version Of Stranger Things

The Boroughs is a show set in a retirement community that offers its residents a full life, complete with amenities like a community center, theaters, restaurants, a golf course, a hospital, and a psychiatric facility known as The Manor. The story follows Sam Cooper (Alfred Molina), a retired engineer who recently lost his wife, Lilly. They had planned to move to The Boroughs together, but he ends up moving there on his own.

Okay, so initially, Sam was desperate to get out of town, but after getting to know his neighbors, he started to feel like maybe the Boroughs wasn’t so bad. That all changed one night when he saw something horrific – a monster actually feeding on one of his new friends, who sadly didn’t make it. Now, Sam, along with the people he’s connected with, is on a mission to figure out what this creature is, why it’s attacking the town, and what brought it here in the first place. It’s worth noting this isn’t a story for kids; The Boroughs really centers on the lives and struggles of adults.

Despite its huge success, Stranger Things was often criticized for feeling too geared towards younger viewers, even with its mature themes. While Dark is frequently compared to a more adult version of the show, The Boroughs is now being hailed as a better fit for that description.

Similar to Stranger Things, the central mystery of The Boroughs involves a monster that needs humans to live. However, instead of focusing on kids like Stranger Things, The Boroughs follows a group of retirees. These seniors, with their unique abilities and life experience, form an unlikely but effective team, giving them a renewed sense of purpose.

Will The Boroughs Return For A Second Season?

Even though it’s only eight episodes, The Boroughs wraps up its story nicely. There aren’t many unresolved plot points at the end, and the one ambiguous detail is open to your own understanding. While a second season isn’t necessary, the show does leave the door open for Netflix to continue the story if they choose.

As of today, it’s unclear whether The Boroughs will be back for another season, although the show’s creators have ideas for future seasons. While initial reviews have been positive, many things could influence a renewal. For now, The Boroughs makes for a great and enjoyable weekend watch.
