27 Years Later, Star Trek Officially Proved Captain Sisko’s Greatest Win

While Captain Benjamin Sisko, played by Avery Brooks, achieved many successes on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy might be considered his ultimate victory. The fifth episode, co-written by Kirsten Beyer and Tawny Newsome and directed by Larry Teng, served as a heartfelt and overdue tribute to both Captain Sisko and Deep Space Nine, which concluded its run in 1999.

Commander Sisko’s seven years in charge of Deep Space Nine proved far more difficult than he’d anticipated. He faced ongoing disputes between alien visitors, the persistent danger posed by Gul Dukat, and the constant threat of the Dominion potentially conquering the Alpha Quadrant. All of this happened as he rose in rank to become a Captain and juggled the immense responsibilities that came with it.

Captain Sisko balanced his Starfleet career with a deeper role as the Emissary to the Prophets of Bajor. Throughout everything, he found love with and married Kasidy Yates, and remained a dedicated father to his son, Jake. Centuries later, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy highlighted that Ben’s most important achievement wasn’t something he did, but the kind of person he was.

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Proved Jake Was Captain Sisko’s Greatest Win

Captain Sisko’s proudest achievement was undoubtedly raising his son, Jake, and this was beautifully highlighted in the fifth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. When SAM, a new recruit, tried to understand Captain Sisko’s past to better grasp her own destiny as an Emissary, Jake’s appearance provided the crucial answers – for both her and the audience.

SAM encountered an older version of Jake Sisko, years after the events of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. He had become the man his father, Benjamin, would have been proud of – kind, intelligent, warm, and possessing a wisdom earned through life experience. Jake reassured SAM that she was deserving of her role as an Emissary.

As a huge Star Trek fan, I was so thrilled to see Jake Sisko back in Starfleet Academy! It really showed how much Benjamin cared for his son – Jake truly took everything his dad taught him to heart and became the man Benjamin always hoped he would be. And honestly, Cirroc Lofton’s performance after 27 years was incredible. It was a beautiful tribute to Avery Brooks and the character of Benjamin Sisko, and totally worth the wait.

Captain Sisko was a highly respected Starfleet officer and a key figure in the United Federation of Planets’ victory during the Dominion War. He was also revered on Bajor as the Emissary of the Prophets, defending the planet from both the Dominion and the Pah-Wraiths. Beyond his impressive career, Benjamin Sisko was a dedicated father, and his son, Jake, truly represents the best qualities of his character.

Why It Took 27 Years For Star Trek To Honor Captain Sisko

The fifth episode of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy quickly became a fan favorite, offering a much-appreciated tribute to Captain Sisko, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, and its dedicated viewers. For years, DS9 fans felt the show hadn’t received the recognition it deserved, a feeling that intensified when Star Trek: Picard brought back the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Prodigy continued the story of Star Trek: Voyager.

While Star Trek: Lower Decks included some familiar faces and characters from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine in animated form, many fans still felt it wasn’t enough. It seemed odd that Paramount+’s Star Trek shows didn’t do more to celebrate DS9. However, Avery Brooks, the actor who played Captain Sisko, is now retired and no longer involved with Star Trek. It was difficult to imagine a satisfying DS9 reunion without him and his iconic character.

Despite being a beloved series, it took a dedicated fan, Tawny Newsome, to champion the inclusion of Captain Sisko and Deep Space Nine in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. While the episode centered entirely on Sisko – with Tawny surprisingly playing the new Dax – it was a heartfelt and well-received tribute to Deep Space Nine that pleased fans.

Even though Avery Brooks wasn’t in the episode, Cirroc Lofton, who played his son on screen, ensured the Star Trek: Starfleet Academy tribute to Captain Sisko had Brooks’ approval. Cirroc even selected a passage voiced by Avery Brooks himself, choosing words that perfectly captured the wisdom and warmth of Captain Sisko.

The show Star Trek: Starfleet Academy featured a brief glimpse of Captain Sisko’s face appearing in the clouds above San Francisco, suggesting that as the Emissary, he continues to watch over his son Jake, SAM, and all of us.
