Highly anticipated movies are coming to theaters this summer, with big premieres planned every month.
Summer 2026 got off to a great start in May with the release of several popular movies and shows, including the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada in theaters and Swapped on Netflix. June is keeping the momentum going with a highly anticipated film from a renowned director, new additions to well-loved series, and a wave of comedies reminiscent of the early 2000s.
Typically, movies are released in a mix of theaters and on streaming services, but this season, theaters are unusually busy. Studios are prioritizing the lucrative summer movie season and are releasing their biggest films only in cinemas. Even with this focus on theaters, a few noteworthy movies are still premiering digitally, like a new comedy starring John Cena on Netflix.
Every movie coming out, whether in theaters or on streaming, has people looking forward to it. It’s hard to say which June releases are generating the most buzz, but several big movies planned for 2026 are creating a lot of excitement. While there’s always some anticipation for new films, a few upcoming releases are generating particularly strong enthusiasm as their release dates get closer.
10. Little Brother
June 26, 2026
Not many movies are coming directly to streaming services this June, but Netflix has a delightfully quirky original film debuting on the 26th.
Matt Spicer, the director of Ingrid Goes West, delivers a wild comedy called Little Brother. John Cena stars as a real estate agent whose perfect life is thrown into chaos when his unpredictable younger brother arrives. Produced by Ruben Fleischer (known for Zombieland), the film is packed with humor and features a funny cast including Ego Nwodim from Saturday Night Live and comedian Caleb Hearon.
John Cena and André Øvredal create an unusual but effective pairing in Little Brother. Cena’s serious demeanor provides a great contrast to Øvredal’s more playful approach, though Cena has confessed to sometimes struggling to keep a straight face while filming. Both actors have exciting projects coming up this year: Cena stars in Coyote vs. Acme, while Øvredal voices a lively announcer in Street Fighter.
9. The Invite
June 26, 2026
In the A24 comedy The Invite, director Olivia Wilde sets the entire story within the confines of one apartment. The film, shot on 35mm film in sequential order, follows two couples as a tense dinner party unfolds.
I was so excited to hear Rashida Jones and Will McCormack were behind the script – it’s based on this fantastic Spanish film! The story centers around a couple, Olivia Wilde and Seth Rogen, who invite their seemingly perfect neighbors, played by Penélope Cruz and Edward Norton, over for a night in. Let me tell you, things definitely don’t go as planned, and it’s way more eventful than they ever expected!
During filming, Wilde and the actors collaborated closely to shape the movie, resulting in a truly original cinematic experience. The Invite received positive reviews after its debut at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival, earning a 91% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. A review from Ebaster specifically highlighted the film’s skillful production and complex relationships between characters.
8. Power Ballad
June 5, 2026
John Carney, a writer and director known for making charming musical films like his 2016 hit Sing Street (which critics loved, with a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), is releasing a new movie called Power Ballad. It’s a comedy about a former wedding singer, played by Paul Rudd, and a boy-band star whose popularity is fading, Joe Jonas. The two find a connection that helps them both get their lives and careers back on track.
Rudd and Jonas make a delightful pair in this funny, heartwarming movie, showcasing both their comedic timing and musical abilities. While Jonas is already known for his strong singing, critics are particularly impressed with his acting. At the premiere of Power Ballad, Rudd told People magazine he was blown away by Jonas’s performance.
The new comedy, Power Ballad, will debut in some theaters on May 29th, before opening nationwide on June 5th. It’s already getting attention thanks to its talented cast and good reviews – it currently has a 7 out of 10 rating from Ebaster and an 88% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
7. The Death of Robin Hood
June 19, 2026
I’m really excited about this new movie, The Death of Robin Hood! It’s directed by Michael Sarnoski, who did Pig, and it’s not your typical Robin Hood story. It’s a darker take, focusing on an older Robin Hood who’s haunted by things he’s done. He’s being looked after by someone secretive who seems to offer him a way to make things right, a chance at redemption. It’s shaping up to be a really gripping thriller from A24.
Okay, so the trailer for this new Robin Hood film just dropped, and it’s… intense. Forget the swashbuckling hero you think you know – this one’s promising a seriously dark take, even going so far as to suggest, with the tagline “He Was No Hero,” that the legend is about to be completely dismantled. It’s a fascinating shift, especially coming from Hugh Jackman after something as lighthearted as The Sheep Detectives. He seems to be diving headfirst into a much grittier role. And the supporting cast? Seriously stacked. We’re talking Jodie Comer of Killing Eve, Bill Skarsgård from It, Murray Bartlett of The White Lotus, and the incredibly talented Noah Jupe. This isn’t your typical Robin Hood story, folks, and I’m already intrigued.
The mature, epic film releases on June 19th, the same day as a family-friendly movie, but that shouldn’t significantly affect its viewership.
6. Scary Movie
June 5, 2026
Okay, I’m so excited! It really feels like the early 2000s again with a new Scary Movie coming out. I mean, this franchise has been hilariously spoofing horror movies and pop culture for 26 years now! And even better, the Wayans family is back together to make Scary Movie 6, with Michael Tiddes – who did A Haunted House – directing. I can’t wait!
No horror movie is safe from being spoofed in this new parody, which pokes fun at all the current trends—from serious, artistic horror to endless remakes. The trailer for ‘Scary Movie 6′ is packed with references to 14 different horror films, even including some that were nominated for Oscars. By tapping into viewers’ love of nostalgia and silly humor, the trailer quickly created a lot of buzz.
Following the enthusiastic reaction to the trailer, Marlon Wayans revealed the movie’s release date has been moved forward by one week. The highly anticipated horror comedy will now hit theaters on June 5th.
5. Jackass: Best and Last
June 26, 2026
As a longtime viewer, I figured the day would come, but it’s still a little sad to say goodbye. Jackass Forever feels like the true final chapter for Johnny Knoxville and the whole crew. It all started back in 2000 with that crazy MTV show where they just…well, did incredibly silly and often disgusting stunts. Then, in 2002, they somehow brought that energy to the big screen with Jackass: The Movie. Now, after 24 years of pushing boundaries and making us cringe and laugh, Knoxville has said this is it – the last hurrah for the Jackass franchise.
Before showing the trailer for the latest Jackass movie, Johnny Knoxville told the audience at CinemaCon he’d try to stay composed, as this is likely to be the last Jackass film ever made. The trailer showed familiar faces from past films, as well as a new addition to the crew: a robot named Lary.
Get ready for one last round of hilarious stunts! Jackass: Best and Last is bringing together the most memorable moments from the entire series, along with all-new, over-the-top gags. It hits theaters on June 26th and promises to be the most outrageous Jackass movie yet.
4. Supergirl
June 26, 2026
Milly Alcock, who will first appear as Supergirl in David Corenswet’s Superman (2025), is now starring in her own movie. Supergirl will be directed by Craig Gillespie, known for I, Tonya, while James Gunn will produce.
This movie is based on the DC comic Woman of Tomorrow by Tom King and Bilquis Evely, which draws inspiration from the classic film True Grit. It’s a space western where Supergirl (Kara Zor-El) reluctantly teams up with a young alien warrior who’s determined to avenge her father’s death.
The upcoming film Supergirl (2026) closely follows the classic comic book storyline, with the exciting addition of the character Lobo, a bounty hunter originally appearing in Omega Men #3. Jason Momoa, known for his role as Aquaman, is taking on the part of Lobo, which is generating a lot of buzz. With James Gunn’s Superman having earned $618.7 million worldwide, expectations are high for Supergirl’s success.
3. Toy Story 5
June 19, 2026
The next Toy Story movie is highly anticipated, especially after the success of the fourth film, which received a strong 8 out of 10 rating from Ebaster and a 97% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes. Though Josh Cooley isn’t directing this time, Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris are taking on the directing roles.
In Toy Story 5, Woody is showing his age – he now has a bald spot from years of being played with, which has sparked some debate. The movie tells a touching story about how older toys try to stay relevant and loved when kids are increasingly interested in high-tech gadgets.
Following the success of the fourth movie, Toy Story 5 is predicted to be a big hit in theaters. Experts believe it will be the highest-earning film in June, potentially making around $439.9 million in the United States.
2. Masters of the Universe
June 5, 2026
A new Masters of the Universe movie is heading to cinemas, continuing the classic story. Directed by Travis Knight, known for Kubo and the Two Strings, the 2026 film features Nicholas Galitzine as Prince Adam. He discovers his home, Eternia, has been taken over by the villain Skeletor (played by Jared Leto), and must learn to harness his powers to save it.
Dolph Lundgren, who originally played He-Man in the live-action films, will appear in the new movie to mentor Galitzine’s Prince Adam. Lundgren told Variety that filming the scene felt like giving advice to his younger self.
Okay, so everyone’s really hyped for Masters of the Universe – the franchise has a huge following, they got a ton of big names in it, and it looks amazing. I’m betting it’ll absolutely crush it at the box office when it comes out on June 5th. But honestly, I think Toy Story 5 will probably be the biggest movie of the whole month, even with all the buzz around Masters.
1. Disclosure Day
June 12, 2026
Disclosure Day is the most anticipated movie release of June, arriving on June 12.
Steven Spielberg returns to the world of alien encounters with his latest film, a 145-minute science fiction story. This is his first movie since 2022’s The Fabelmans, and it marks his fourth time directing a feature about extraterrestrial life, following classics like Close Encounters of the Third Kind, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and War of the Worlds. Disclosure Day focuses on how people would react if it was definitively proven that life exists beyond Earth.
The challenging production of the new Universal Pictures film has built a lot of excitement. Director Steven Spielberg shared his detailed plan – a 38-page outline – with writer David Koepp, a frequent collaborator. Together, they revised the story an incredible 42 times until it was just right – the most drafts Koepp has ever done for a film, according to Variety.
