The final season of The Boys saw several villains defeated, while others unexpectedly stepped up to do what was right. Although Homelander ultimately fell due to the repercussions of his own choices, it was actually one of his closest allies who created the opportunity to end his control over America.
I’ve been watching Ashley Barrett, played by Colby Minifie, since the very beginning of The Boys, and her character is just fascinating. She really embodies how Vought’s corporate ruthlessness can eat away at a person. It’s been heartbreaking to see her climb the ladder, sacrificing everything and everyone along the way, and ultimately becoming so isolated and paranoid. Even though she always seemed so cold and calculating, I always sensed a tiny bit of good still hidden inside. But honestly, it was her final decision that really solidified her redemption in my eyes – it was a powerful moment!
Ashley Represents Being a Small Human Among the Powerful
From the start, Ashley was a force to be reckoned with. Though she often seemed scared of powerful people like Homelander at Vought, she was actually very cunning and willing to do what it took to get ahead. Even as Madelyn Stillwell’s assistant, where she had little official power, she wasn’t afraid to be blunt with people like Starlight, because she was a good judge of character. Ashley understood that Starlight wasn’t the type to retaliate harshly, something neither Homelander nor Madelyn would have counted on.
Homelander began systematically eliminating anyone in a position of authority if he suspected even a hint of disloyalty or if they didn’t help him gain more power. As each person died, Ashley unexpectedly stepped into their roles—even positions like Vice President and President—despite lacking the necessary qualifications. Driven by fear for her life, she concealed the truth about Homelander and controlled how the public viewed him.
Ashley wasn’t truly a bad person, even with everything she did. She was just an ordinary person in an impossible situation. Her job involved life-or-death decisions, and sometimes doing what was necessary meant compromising her own values. That’s what makes her such a compelling character in The Boys – she feels very relatable. When she struggles with whether to defy Homelander, the audience is left wondering what they would do in her place.
Ashley’s Ending Is Exactly What the Boys Fought For
A major shift happened for Ashley at the end of Season 3. When she saw security footage proving Maeve had survived her battle with Soldier Boy, Ashley destroyed the footage to keep Maeve safe from Homelander. This quiet act marked the beginning of a dangerous uprising against him.
Ashley’s attempts to undermine Homelander and Vought weren’t reckless; she always made sure she had a backup plan. This highlighted her pragmatic side. For example, after failing to convince Oh Father to question Homelander’s godlike status, she actively assisted the Boys in their plot to assassinate him at the White House.
Honestly, seeing her downfall was a powerful moment. But what really stuck with me was that she didn’t ride off into the sunset with a happy ending. She still faced the consequences for helping Homelander, losing her job as President. It feels like ‘The Boys’ is saying that even if someone tries to become a better person, that doesn’t erase their past mistakes – and it shouldn’t. It’s a really important message about accountability; true justice means facing consequences for your actions, even without superheroes muddying the waters.
Ashley will likely never be considered a traditional hero; she’s more of a flawed character who stumbled into success through a few good decisions. However, she perfectly represents how a good person can be failed by a broken system, and that’s a powerful and undeniable part of her story.
The Boys is available to stream on Prime Video.
