With the end of The Blacklist, a unique type of show disappeared – one focused on the thrilling psychological game between a clever criminal and a determined FBI agent. Now, Nemesis, a new eight-episode streaming series, has stepped in to fill that gap.
Rather than attempting to mimic the style of popular, high-quality dramas, the creators of Power: Nemesis, Courtney A. Kemp and Tani Marole, have focused on the intense rivalry between the two main characters—a criminal mastermind and a Los Angeles detective—who are constantly trying to outwit each other. While not perfect, Nemesis is a very enjoyable summer show that’s currently scoring 89% on Rotten Tomatoes and is one of the top two most-watched shows worldwide on its platform.
Why Nemesis Scratches The Blacklist Itch For Fans
The series centers around the conflict between a brilliant criminal and a determined law enforcement officer, but Nemesis offers a fresh take on this familiar dynamic. Instead of the officer being the protagonist, we follow Coltrane Wilder, the mastermind thief. Despite his crimes, Wilder is a likable character because he’s fiercely loyal to his team, devoted to his wife, and truly wants to retire after one final heist.
Lieutenant Isaiah Stiles is presented as the hero of the story, but he’s a deeply flawed character. Driven by a strong desire for revenge against Coltrane’s group, he becomes consumed by his anger, leading to the breakdown of his marriage and a strained relationship with his son.
Similar to the dynamic between Reddington and Keen, this new thriller explores a world where right and wrong aren’t clear-cut. You’ll find a police officer behaving like a criminal and a thief acting like a devoted family man. It’s this moral ambiguity that creates constant suspense.
The show keeps you guessing about who to root for, constantly challenging your beliefs. It makes you wonder: is a husband who carefully plans a huge robbery any better than a detective who destroys his own life for revenge?
Nemesis Is Pure Entertainment Even When the Script Stumbles
This show isn’t trying to be a critical masterpiece, and it shows in the writing. Many critics have compared it to a lower-budget version of Heat, and its inspiration is obvious. The storyline has some unlikely twists that feel either too obvious or don’t really add anything special to the show.
Despite a few weaknesses, the show is still highly enjoyable. While the plot isn’t always perfectly logical, it moves at a fast pace, and the strong supporting cast really brings the story to life. It’s more than just a two-person show focused on tough guys. Viewers who liked The Wire will appreciate familiar faces like Michael Potts and Domenick Lombardozzi, who bring a realistic feel to the police scenes and ground the more over-the-top moments.
The connections between the characters are as unpredictable as the robberies themselves. Cleopatra Coleman delivers a heartfelt performance as Ebony, a wife determined to help her husband escape a life of crime. But Sophina Brown truly shines as Ebony’s sister, Charlie. The film opens with a memorable Halloween heist – Coltrane robs a mansion while dressed as Nino Brown! It’s a stylish, fast-paced scene filled with action, and it effectively sets up the story and introduces the characters.
The filmmakers weren’t focused on creating a deeply thematic experience. Instead, they set out to make a fast-paced, exciting thriller perfect for watching all in one weekend.
Nemesis Finale Makes Season 2 an Absolute Necessity
Their conflict quickly escalates, moving beyond the streets and deeply impacting their personal lives. By the series finale, the consequences of Isaiah and Coltrane’s feud are devastating. Isaiah makes a terrible choice, involving a dangerous cartel and completely destroying any remaining trust in him as a law enforcement officer.
The pursuit relentlessly drives both characters to their limits, compelling them to make devastating choices that tragically involve their families. While we won’t spoil the ending, it’s safe to say the final scene is intensely frustrating yet captivating, easily ranking among the most memorable of the year.
The first season of Nemesis ends in a way that some viewers might find surprising, but it sets up incredible possibilities for a second season that Netflix should definitely approve. The finale dramatically expands the scope of the story, hinting at major changes in location and a whole new wave of dangerous challenges, and leaving many questions unanswered.
It’s clear people are still eager for more of this story. Reaching the top 10 in 83 countries demonstrates a continued desire for this kind of show, and Nemesis has created an ideal foundation for a potentially long-lasting and compelling rivalry.
