The new sci-fi series on Netflix has arrived after a lot of anticipation, and it’s already a hit! Released on May 21st, it’s received overwhelmingly positive reviews – a 95% rating on Rotten Tomatoes – and quickly climbed to become one of the platform’s most-watched shows, landing at number four in just two days. It’s showing real potential to challenge Stranger Things as the most popular series on Netflix.
Featuring Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, and Bill Pullman, The Buroughs tells the story of a peaceful retirement community turned upside down. When strange, otherworldly forces threaten to steal the residents’ remaining time, this unlikely group must become heroes and fight back to save their lives.
The Boroughs Feels Entirely Singular in Its Narrative
Originality is rare in TV these days, with many shows simply retreading familiar ground. The Boroughs isn’t flawless, but it stands out as something new and introduces a compelling type of hero we haven’t seen much of. As critic David Opie puts it, the show is more than just similar to Stranger Things; it’s a unique sci-fi story that works well on its own, despite a few minor issues. Hunter Ingram agrees, praising the show’s clever use of monsters to explore how we learn from – and sometimes distort – the lessons of the past.
Audiences are loving The Boroughs, giving it an 85% approval rating. One viewer called it “an absolute masterpiece,” praising Bill Pullman’s performance and the show’s incredible cast. Given the series’ strong ratings and viewership numbers, a second season seems likely – and many hope Netflix will continue the show, breaking its pattern of canceling popular series prematurely.
