With the highly anticipated 007 First Light launching soon, I wanted to highlight a James Bond game that often gets overlooked: Quantum of Solace.
I’m not referring to the popular Call of Duty game made by Treyarch. I’m talking about a lesser-known PlayStation 2 game by Eurocom, which has gameplay similar to the original Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.
This single-player campaign, much like the original console game, combines the plot of Casino Royale with the overall theme of the James Bond franchise. Players will embark on a worldwide adventure filled with classic spy action.
The PS3 game is full of action, but this lesser-known PS2 version is more like a classic Bond film, focusing on realistic spying and sneaking around.
The game features a cover system similar to the one in Uncharted, and it rewards players for using it to get around enemies and take them down with stealthy close-combat attacks.
Once the gameplay starts, this game is visually exciting. You can destroy objects for cover, which keeps the action dynamic, and the environments react with impressive detail as things break and explode.
The game’s controls feel a bit outdated, reflecting older standards for shooting mechanics.
When you take cover, you can quickly peek out and aim around obstacles by using the analog stick. However, the DualShock 2 controller’s imprecise controls make it tricky to aim accurately. A dedicated aim button – pressed with the left stick – does improve targeting, but it’s still not perfect.
This game is most enjoyable when played on the easiest difficulty. It makes the experience less frustrating with the controls and lets you fully appreciate the game’s visuals and overall presentation.
For a PlayStation 2 game released in 2008, the graphics are surprisingly good – almost as good as those found on the PlayStation 3 around that time, even considering the lower resolution and the PS2’s older technology.
The game also includes the appearance and voice of actor Daniel Craig, along with other well-known actors from the movies, like Judy Dench as M.
You can finish the game’s story in just over 90 minutes, so it might not have been worth the full price if you bought it when it first came out.
Even though the marketing heavily promoted the PS3 version, I was pleasantly surprised by how fun the adventure game turned out to be.
The studio in the UK created a few more James Bond games, like the moderately successful GoldenEye 007 Reloaded and the poorly received 007 Legends, before closing its doors in 2012.
Its story is forever tied to the world of James Bond. One of the company’s earliest games was a platformer based on the cartoon series James Bond Jr. for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).
However, I believe this iteration of Quantum of Solace, boasting strong visuals and action reminiscent of the Uncharted series, represents some of the team’s finest work – and is definitely deserving of more recognition.
If you happen to come across this game for cheap, definitely give it a try. It’s not the best Bond game out there, but it’s still a lot of fun.
