Sherwood writer teases season 3’s new family including Skins star, who are ‘really put through the wringer’

James Graham, who created the new BBC drama Dear England, also wrote the popular series Sherwood, and a second season of that show is coming soon.

Sherwood’s third season started filming earlier this year and has added several new actors to the cast, including Rosalie Craig, Joe Dempsie, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, Sue Johnston, Peter Wight, Ben Batt, and Adam Long.

In a recent exclusive interview for our video series, The TopMob Writers’ Room, where we explore the minds of screenwriters, Graham shared that filming for season 3 has wrapped up and gave us a hint of what’s to come.

We’ve finished filming the third series, and now it’s being edited,” Graham shared (you can see him talk about it in the video above).

Honestly, one of the best parts of this whole experience has been getting to work with so many of the original cast again. People like Leslie Manville, David Morrissey, and Lorraine Ashbourne – bringing Claire Rushbrook and Robert Glenister back too! It’s just… saying their names feels surreal. They’re all so talented, I honestly feel incredibly lucky to be working with them. I keep thinking, ‘What am I doing to deserve this?’

Graham explained that these shows are truly national gems. He was particularly impressed with the actors in Sherwood, noting they seem to come from a background where they genuinely prioritize TV dramas that explore social and political issues.

This kind of drama has roots in the work of writers like Alan Bleasdale, Jimmy McGovern, Sally Wainwright, and Paul Abbott, going back to the 80s and 90s. It’s more than just entertainment; it aims to explore and understand the issues facing real communities and the people within them.

Working with the cast has been fantastic. As with every season, we introduced a new group of actors and really challenged them with a difficult storyline. It was a demanding process, but incredibly rewarding, especially with talented leads like Rosalie Craig, recently in ‘Riot Women,’ and Joe Dempsie, known from ‘Skins.’ It’s wonderful to have such strong Nottingham-based actors bringing a Nottinghamshire story to life.
