Anne Hathaway Shares She Was Legally Blind in One Eye for 10 Years

Suddenly, Anne Hathaway can see—and she’s revealing why the hell it means so much to her.

Anne Hathaway, the actress known for The Devil Wears Prada, recently revealed she almost lost her sight in her thirties because of a vision problem that started early in her life.

Anne recently shared on the New York TimesPopcast podcast that she was severely visually impaired for a decade, from age 30 to 40. She developed cataracts early in life, which significantly affected her vision, leaving her legally blind in one eye.

So, it was a whole new world once she got surgery to fix the ailment.

She explained that she hadn’t understood the extent of the problem until everything became clear. Since then, she’d been able to relax, realizing the situation had been seriously affecting her health. While others might not have experienced it the same way, it had really taken a toll on her nerves.

Anne, a mother of 10-year-old Jonathan and 6-year-old Jack, and wife of Adam Shulman, shared that being able to fix something herself made her especially grateful for her vision.

She expressed gratitude for each day, calling it a miracle. Reflecting on her surgery, she realized people in her family just two generations ago wouldn’t have had access to such treatment, making her recovery feel even more extraordinary.

Anne isn’t the only famous person to share news about a health issue. Earlier in March, Dolly Parton announced she’s been dealing with some health problems, causing her to delay her planned shows in Las Vegas.

As many fans know, I haven’t been touring recently,” Dolly explained while at Dollywood in March. “I’ve been dealing with some minor health concerns, but I’m getting great care.”

And while Dolly didn’t ruminate on what got her down, she did share how she got right back up.

I focused on rebuilding my strength and well-being – spiritually, emotionally, and physically. I’m doing well now, and this didn’t hold me back at all.

In May 2026, the host of the BFFs podcast had emergency surgery when doctors found a large cyst on her ovary. The cyst had twisted her organs and was causing internal bleeding.

After surgery, Brianna explained in a TikTok video that doctors found about half a liter of blood inside her pelvic area. She also mentioned she had five cuts on her stomach, and the surgeons used a camera inserted through her belly button to locate the source of the bleeding.

Okay, so you won’t believe this, but something a little unexpected happened during a match last July. I was wrestling Piper Niven, and she gave me a pretty solid elbow slam. Turns out, it actually caused one of my breast implants to shift! It was definitely a surprise, and something I hadn’t anticipated happening in the ring!

She reassured her sister, Bella Garcia, that they would get the issue resolved eventually. She explained to the doctor that as soon as her career was over, she’d return to address the problem, ensuring everything looked its best for future opportunities. She wanted to make sure things didn’t appear neglected or worn down.

Lupita Nyong’o received a diagnosis of uterine fibroids—non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus—in 2014, which was the same year she won an Academy Award for her acting performance.

She didn’t reveal her diagnosis until 2025, when she shared on Instagram that she had been privately struggling with it for over ten years.

She explained that many girls are taught to accept period pain as a normal part of being a woman. This often leaves them dealing with a common issue in silence and feeling isolated.

In July 2025, the actress from Daisy Jones & The Six revealed she’d been hospitalized for a hernia. This happened because she’d been wearing pants that were too tight, which caused a gap in her abdominal muscles.

Someone messaged Suki on X (formerly Twitter), asking why she hadn’t been posting lately. Suki replied, jokingly suggesting the reason was a hernia she got six months ago from wearing very tight pants, which she’s been afraid to mention.

The former star of Beverly Hills, 90210 shared in April 2025 that he was recovering from surgery to repair a nearly burst appendix.

Brian shared in an Instagram video that he recently experienced stomach pain which led him to the emergency room. He explained that his appendix had a perforation – it hadn’t fully burst, but was very close to doing so.

He added, “I’m on the road to recovery. It’s not an easy process. This is my first major surgery.”

A Racing Louisville soccer player fell to the ground just minutes into the team’s September 14th game against Seattle Reign at Lumen Field in Seattle.

As a lifestyle expert focused on well-being, I was really concerned to see the US Women’s National Team player go down during the game. Reports from Reuters showed her slowly sitting down with a teammate for support, and then, unfortunately, she collapsed right after. Trainers immediately came to check on her, which is thankfully standard procedure, but it was definitely a scary moment to witness.

After receiving initial medical attention on the field, Savannah was taken to a nearby hospital for more tests, the National Women’s Soccer League reported. They stated she is currently in stable condition and responsive.

Adam Devine revealed that he still feels the effects of injuries he suffered as a child when he was hit by a cement truck at age 11.

“It’s been a really difficult time,” Devine shared on the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast in 2025. “I’ve been experiencing spasms all over my body, and doctors actually told me recently that I was facing a life-threatening situation—I was told I might not have much time left.”

He explained that his pain is intermittent, saying, “My body has a few quirks and isn’t quite perfect.”

The reality TV star revealed he had to crawl to the hospital because of severe back pain that got worse during a road trip with a friend.

He described a strange tingling sensation that still lingered in his legs as of March 2025, sharing this on his Trading Secrets podcast. To illustrate the issue, he explained that just a few weeks or a month prior, he was able to squat 295 pounds. Now, he can’t even do a squat, struggles with single-leg balance, and feels unsteady, comparing it to the feeling of having a stroke.

But with the help of a back specialist and some steroids, he added, “We’re on the mend.”

Gina Kirschenheiter, from The Real Housewives of Orange County, revealed that her ex-husband, Matt Kirschenheiter, had a heart attack in March 2025, but he is now doing okay.

In March 2025, the actor from 30 Rock experienced a medical issue at a New York Knicks game and had to be taken out of Madison Square Garden in a wheelchair.

The comedian later posted on social media to explain that he had actually been sick with food poisoning, but was starting to feel better.

In February 2025, the former Even Stevens star revealed she was shot in the face during a birthday celebration for her husband, Brendan Rooney. They were on a clay pigeon shooting trip when the incident occurred.

In an Instagram post, she explained that she was accidentally shot in the face by someone at a party who fired a weapon unsafely. Brendan Rooney quickly helped her, evaluated her injuries, and drove her to the hospital. She was hit five times, and one bullet narrowly missed her right eye, coming within an inch of a direct hit.

The Kim Possible actress explained that a small piece of something got stuck behind her eye. Doctors have advised against removing it with surgery right now, but they will keep a close watch on her condition, as her vision is currently normal.

The actress expressed immense gratitude for surviving a frightening experience. She shared her deep love for her daughters, husband, family, and friends, emphasizing how quickly life can change. She urged everyone to cherish their loved ones and hug them whenever possible, as life is precious and unpredictable.

Amy Schumer is grateful for the internet, despite its often negative side, because it helped her discover a health issue. After noticing she looked “puffier” and receiving critical comments online, doctors began commenting on interviews, suggesting she might have Cushing syndrome, a condition often linked to high cortisol levels or steroid injections. This prompted Amy to realize she’d been receiving steroid injections after a breast reduction and C-section. She later learned she had a form of Cushing syndrome that would resolve on its own, which she described as “the greatest news imaginable.” Amy is now relieved to be healthy and credits the online attention with leading to her diagnosis.

I was so worried when I heard about what happened to Tom Fitzgerald’s son, the AHL player, back in December 2024. He was unfortunately cut by a skate during a game and needed 25 stitches! Thankfully, he fully recovered, and his dad, Tom Fitzgerald, shared with ESPN how incredibly relieved they were. He said, and it really struck me, ‘We’re very lucky. I don’t wish that on any parent.’ It was a scary situation, and I’m so glad everything turned out okay.

In March 2022, Hailey Bieber experienced a frightening health scare while having breakfast with her husband, Justin. She suddenly developed stroke-like symptoms, initially unable to respond when Justin asked if she was alright. She then found she couldn’t speak and the right side of her face began to droop.

Although her speech and facial movement eventually returned, Hailey went to the hospital and tests revealed she’d had a small blood clot in her brain, which doctors identified as a TIA (Transient Ischemic Attack).

Further examination at UCLA discovered Hailey had a hole in her heart called a patent foramen ovale (PFO). Doctors determined the blood clot had traveled to her brain through this hole, causing the TIA.

Hailey has since undergone a successful procedure to close the PFO and is now doing well.

The same year Hailey faced a health issue, Justin also experienced one. In June 2022, he revealed he had been diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome, a condition that temporarily paralyzed part of his face and forced him to cancel the rest of his Justice World Tour.

In a video posted to Instagram, Justin explained that the virus affected the nerves in his ear and face, causing paralysis. He showed fans how it prevented him from blinking, smiling, or moving one side of his face, and made it difficult to eat. Thankfully, the paralysis eventually went away.

Hailey shared on Good Morning America that Justin was recovering well and feeling much better. She described it as a scary and unexpected situation, but reassured everyone that he would be okay and that she was grateful he was on the mend.

Jamie Foxx recently shared details about the health scare he experienced in April 2023, which he had initially kept private. In his 2024 Netflix special, What Had Happened Was…, he explained that he suffered from a severe headache one day while in Atlanta. He asked for aspirin, but lost consciousness before he could take it, and doesn’t remember the next twenty days.

Initially, a doctor gave him a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister, Deidra Dixon, was worried and took him to the hospital. There, they discovered he’d had a brain bleed that led to a stroke.

After surgery, Jamie woke up in a wheelchair on May 4th, unable to walk. He then traveled to Chicago for rehabilitation and therapy. He expressed his gratitude for the prayers he received, saying, “I needed every prayer.”

The reality TV star said she temporarily stopped breathing while running in the first challenge of the NBC competition show.

She shared on the show Fit for TV: The Reality of The Biggest Loser that her memory of the event was fragmented. She recalled hearing a helicopter, feeling like she was floating, and then seeing her grandfather. After that, everything went dark, but she then experienced a bright light, leading her to realize she had died that day.

She explained that her organs were failing. She hadn’t known she had rhabdomyolysis, a condition where your body essentially begins to shut down.

Emilia Clarke, known for her role in Game of Thrones, revealed a harrowing health battle in a 2019 essay for The New Yorker. While filming the series, she experienced a sudden, severe headache while at the gym. She described collapsing and becoming violently ill, realizing something was seriously wrong with her brain.

A hospital scan quickly revealed she had suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), a life-threatening stroke caused by a ruptured aneurysm. She immediately underwent surgery to repair it, but the pain was excruciating. During her recovery, she experienced aphasia, leaving her unable to speak coherently.

Though the aphasia eventually passed and she was discharged after a month, a 2013 scan revealed the aneurysm had doubled in size, requiring a second surgery. This operation failed, causing a major bleed, and doctors warned her that another surgery – this time requiring them to open her skull – was her only chance of survival.

Fortunately, Emilia reports she has now made a full recovery and is doing well.

Cori Broadus, Snoop Dogg’s daughter, recently shared her gratitude for her family’s support after she suffered a stroke in January 2024. She immediately contacted them, sending a text message and a photo, and they quickly came to her aid, as she told TopMob News correspondent Will Marfuggi in December 2024. While she could have been discharged after the stroke, existing health issues—including lupus and failing kidneys—required a longer hospital stay. Cori is now recovering well. “I’m doing great,” she said, explaining that she’s been working to regain some motor skills, but is otherwise doing fine.

Shailene Woodley struggled with significant health issues throughout her early twenties. In a September 2024 podcast interview, she explained that she experienced hearing loss, extreme fatigue – unable to walk for more than five minutes without needing hours of rest – and constant stomach pain. She faced a confusing array of diagnoses and conflicting advice from doctors.

Determined to find answers, Woodley, who prefers to keep her specific condition private, combined traditional medical care with holistic and herbal remedies. This search for well-being spanned a decade.

She explained that the physical discomfort led to deeper issues, including fear of food and struggles with body image, identity, and feeling comfortable in her own body. However, after years of focusing on both her physical and mental health, Woodley is now happy to report that she’s fully recovered and healthy.
