I don’t want to jump the gun and call anything the ‘movie of the summer’ just yet – there are still some big releases like Disclosure Day and The Odyssey on the way – but I have to say, the new horror film Obsession is a fantastic start to the season! It’s really grabbed my attention.
Curry Barker’s film, made with a budget of under $1 million, has become a surprising box office hit. Excellent reviews and enthusiastic audience recommendations have driven its success, making it one of the most notable independent film triumphs of recent years.
There’s already a lot of buzz about the film potentially winning awards, and many believe Inde Navarrette’s incredible performance could even earn her an Oscar nomination.
With all the buzz surrounding it, you’re probably eager to find out what ‘Obsession’ is all about. Here’s everything you need to know about how to watch it.
How to watch Obsession – is it streaming?
Currently, this movie is playing exclusively in theaters. Considering its massive success, it will probably stay that way for a while as the studio aims to capitalize on its popularity.
Because the film is doing so well, it will be playing in plenty of cinemas, so you should be able to find a showing nearby. Even if you have to travel a bit, seeing it will be worth the effort!
If you’d prefer to watch from the comfort of your own home – maybe you like having the lights on – you’ll probably have to wait a bit longer.
When will Obsession be available to watch at home?

We don’t have a release date for streaming or digital purchase yet, but “Obsession” will eventually be available to rent or buy on popular platforms.
Originally, there was speculation the movie would be available to stream in early June, but with its massive success in theaters – and continued strong performance – that now appears highly improbable.
In a recent Variety interview, producer Jason Blum stated he strongly supports keeping movies in theaters for a significant amount of time.
He noted it was fantastic that the audience understood what was happening. You’d expect them to want to purchase the movie for home viewing, but instead, they were enthusiastically supporting its continued run in cinemas.
People love going to the theater, and they’re choosing to support it over the ease of watching shows at home to help ensure their local theaters stay open.
We’re expecting the film to be available to rent or buy online around the end of June, but we’ll let you know as soon as we have a confirmed release date.
It’s currently unknown if the show will be available on a streaming service like Netflix or Prime Video. We’ll let you know if we hear any news about that!
Obsession plot – what’s it about?

This movie reimagines the story of “The Monkey’s Paw.” It centers on Bear, a music store worker, who wishes his childhood friend and crush, Nikki, would fall in love with him. He soon discovers that wishes can have unexpected and negative consequences.
A young man, desperate to win over the girl he likes, makes a wish on a magical willow tree. His wish comes true, but he quickly learns that even getting what you want can have terrible consequences.
Obsession review – is it worth the hype?
A star rating of 4 out of 5.
As a big horror fan, I always say we should learn from stories like ‘The Monkey’s Paw’ – be careful what you wish for! But this movie? It proves we haven’t. It’s a really smart, genuinely scary film, especially considering it wasn’t made with a huge budget. And just to clear things up, the director, Curry Barker, isn’t related to the famous horror director Clive Barker – though he definitely knows how to create a creepy atmosphere!
Michael Johnston, who goes by Bear, uses a special charm called a “One Wish Willow” to express his feelings for someone he likes – he wishes that person would love him above all others. Inde Navarrette plays Nikki, who immediately falls for him, but predictably, things don’t turn out as he hoped.
While the story of Obsession isn’t groundbreaking, it handles the complex topic of consent with thoughtfulness and relevance. Despite a limited budget, director Barker delivers a visually striking film, including at least one genuinely shocking and gruesome scare that will leave viewers rattled.
This film is genuinely funny, surprisingly dark, and remarkably well-made, especially considering its limited resources (Bear’s phone call to the “One Wish Willow” helpline is a standout moment). It makes you wonder what director Barker could achieve with a bigger budget. Just be careful what you ask for!
Obsession cast – who stars in the film?
Considering the film’s limited budget, the actors are mostly newcomers. However, Michael Johnston and particularly Inde Navarrette really shone in their roles and have likely given their careers a significant lift.
