Star Wars Confirms New Cal Kestis Stories After Jedi 3 (But There’s a Catch)

Ever since Disney bought Lucasfilm in 2012, Star Wars has introduced many new characters through games, shows, and movies. One of the most interesting is Cal Kestis, who first appeared in the video game Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. The game follows Cal, a Jedi who survived the infamous Order 66, as he embarks on a mission to find Force-sensitive children. The success of Fallen Order led to a sequel, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, released in 2023. Though not officially announced, a third game in the series is likely, and it seems Cal Kestis’s story isn’t finished yet.

Speaking with Game Rant, a Disney insider hinted that Cal Kestis could return to the Star Wars universe. While stopping short of a confirmation, the representative pointed to Cal’s lightsaber being available in the Disney parks and mentioned that more stories featuring the character are planned.

Cal Kestis’ Star Wars Future Explained

The Disney representative’s statement is unclear. It’s difficult to tell if they’re talking about bringing Cal Kestis to the Disney parks, or expanding his role within the Star Wars universe generally. While it’s likely they mean the broader franchise, simply adding Cal to Galaxy’s Edge isn’t the same as developing his character’s story. A meet-and-greet is different from truly building on his journey.

It will be fascinating to see what Lucasfilm does with Cal Kestis if they continue to expand his story. Many fans would love to see Cal brought to life in a live-action series, ideally with Cameron Monaghan reprising his role. However, it’s unclear if such an opportunity will arise, as Lucasfilm appears to be focusing more on theatrical releases than new Disney+ shows. A story set during the time of the Empire could work well, given that the Jedi games take place between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope. Alternatively, Cal could potentially appear in a story set during the New Republic era, assisting in the conflict against Grand Admiral Thrawn.

It might be easier to tell Cal’s story through books or comics. While Star Wars is incredibly popular, many people haven’t played the video games, and introducing Cal in a movie or TV show could confuse those unfamiliar with the game lore. Books and comics reach a smaller, more dedicated audience, which means there’s less pressure to make Cal’s backstory immediately understandable to everyone. Fans who want to learn more about him could read those materials, while those who just want to enjoy the films or shows wouldn’t need to. Lucasfilm Publishing has successfully expanded the stories of many beloved movie characters, so a comic series focusing on Cal would be a good fit.

Don’t be surprised if we see Cal Kestis appear in future Star Wars games. While Jedi 3 may conclude his story arc, the series has been both critically acclaimed and commercially successful. Though it’s admirable to end a story at its peak, EA might be tempted to revisit this profitable franchise if Jedi 3 performs well. Cal could potentially appear as a supporting character in a Jedi spin-off featuring a new main character, or even in a completely different Star Wars title. The good news is Lucasfilm isn’t planning to abandon Cal altogether. He’s a captivating character, and it will be interesting to see what happens to him next.
