When Spider-Noir Is Set in the Marvel Timeline & How It Relates to The Spider-Verse Movies

The new Spider-Man series, Spider-Noir, coming to Prime Video and MGM, isn’t a typical Spider-Man story – and that’s what makes it interesting. This 8-episode series (which we gave a 4-star review) leans into the stranger side of the Spider-Verse, starring Nicolas Cage as Ben Reilly, a retired and troubled hero who also goes by Spider-Man Noir (or just Spider-Noir). It can be a little confusing because Cage previously played a version of Spider-Man Noir in Sony’s Into The Spider-Verse (and will reprise the role in the sequel). We’ll address the two biggest questions viewers likely have about the show’s timeline.

When Spider-Noir Is Set in the Marvel Timeline

Spider-Noir is one of the earliest stories in the broader Marvel Cinematic Universe timeline. Marketed as taking place after World War I, with key characters being veterans of the war, it would actually precede even Captain America and Agent Carter if it followed the main timeline. While parts of Eternals and Eyes of Wakanda are set before WWI, Spider-Noir still represents a very early point in the expanded MCU history. The series is specifically set in 1932, fifteen years after the war, making it several years before the first Avengers appeared.

The historical context after World War I is key. In the comics, Spider-Noir’s costume was inspired by the uniform of his Uncle Ben, a pilot in the war, giving it a military feel. Similarly, in this version, Ben Reilly and the villains are all veterans, influencing their appearances – though Reilly’s look also takes inspiration from classic film noir detectives.

It’s not as far-fetched as it seems to view the entire history of Marvel movies – including those from Sony, Fox, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – as one interconnected story with branching timelines. The MCU’s Multiverse Saga has actually confirmed that all these universes exist alongside each other, and characters have already crossed between them. For example, some fans might assume the Spider-Man Noir from the animated film Into the Spider-Verse is the same as the one in other movies, but they are different characters, and the show explains why they even have different names.

This Spider-Man Noir world seems entirely separate from the one we saw in the original animated Spider-Verse film. That’s exciting because it opens the possibility of seeing two different versions of Nicolas Cage as Spider-Noir interact if Sony chooses to do so. However, that’s the extent of its connection to the animated Spider-Verse movies. Its relationship to Sony’s live-action Spider-Man films is less certain. Because it’s set much earlier in time, it could be the same universe, but there’s currently no evidence to prove that it is.
