The recent announcement that Destiny 2 is ending came as a shock to many players, even though some had been critical of the game’s quality in recent expansions. This shutdown has led to speculation about the future of developer Bungie, but their current hiring practices suggest they may already be working on a new project. Bungie seems to be actively seeking talented developers, hinting that while Destiny 2 is ending, something new could be on the horizon.
Recent financial reports from Sony revealed that Bungie, the studio behind Destiny 2, experienced a significant drop in value, contributing to financial losses. This comes as support for Destiny 2 winds down and Bungie’s latest game, Marathon, has received a lukewarm response. With plans for a Destiny 3 reportedly scrapped, players are understandably concerned about the future of the studio.
Destiny 2’s End Might Pave The Way For Bungie To Reboot Matter As Its Next Project

Bungie cancelled a game called Matter in December 2020, nearly six years ago. Since then, rumors about its possible revival have surfaced repeatedly. Now, new evidence suggests Bungie might be trying to reboot the game with a fresh start. This isn’t the first attempt – a previous revival effort in 2022 was also cancelled. While fans may be wary of Matter’s third attempt at a comeback, internal details at Bungie suggest this time could be different, offering stronger hints that a revival is truly underway.
In July 2024, Sony formed a new development team called TeamLFG, bringing over creators from Bungie to start work on a secret project while the studio got established. TeamLFG began advertising positions, including a Senior Engineer role focused on build systems. The job posting immediately asked applicants if they’d enjoy working on a funny project with cheerful, imaginative characters. This suggests the project is very different in tone from games like Destiny 2 and Marathon, and aligns with descriptions often used for the game Matter.
TeamLFG describes their first game as a team-based action title that blends elements from various genres, including fighting games, platformers, MOBAs, life simulation games, and even games featuring frogs. The game is set in a new, funny, and fantastical universe combining mythology and science fiction. Before it was cancelled, the game—called Matter—was categorized as a Multiplayer Action, Hero Shooter, RPG, MMO, and Third-Person Action game, which aligns with TeamLFG’s description.
Even in 2026, the changes initiated by TeamLFG are still in progress, suggesting consistent development over the last two years. This is further supported by similarities between recent TeamLFG job postings and original job listings for Matter from 2020 – both highlight the use of Unreal Engine 5. Given that Bungie doesn’t use Unreal Engine for either Marathon or Destiny 2, the TeamLFG project is likely a completely new undertaking.
Recruitment Suggests That Bungie’s Next Project Might Be Its Last Chance

All signs suggest Bungie is refocusing on Matter as its next major project, likely dedicating more resources to it and to working with TeamLFG. With Destiny 2 ending, Bungie’s internal teams won’t be creating large expansions anymore; instead, they’ll either work on new projects or continue improving Marathon after its release. The revival of Matter may have been planned since Sony acquired Bungie in 2022, and now it could be a key opportunity for the studio to bounce back after Destiny 2.
Creating a completely new game immediately after continuing updates for Marathon would be very difficult while still supporting Destiny 2. Maintaining Destiny 2 as a live service game required a huge amount of work, regardless of how players felt about its quality over time. Now, by building on the foundation of Matter – a project they’d already started developing – Bungie has a chance to improve and finalize something they began a while ago.
Everything indicates Bungie is starting fresh with a new project, possibly called Matter. Some believe the decision to end support for Destiny 2 was intentional, allowing the studio to concentrate on this new direction. While TeamLFG’s project could be something entirely new, it’s likely Bungie wants to move quickly past Destiny 2 and show players what’s next in a relatively short amount of time.
