Giant Skull’s Canceled D&D Game Has Me Very Worried about Warlock

With the huge popularity of Baldur’s Gate 3, the next big role-playing game based on Dungeons & Dragons has a lot to live up to. D&D video games have had a mixed history, but Baldur’s Gate 3 really raised the bar. Looking ahead to 2026, there were a couple of potential candidates for the next major D&D RPG. Giant Skull, a new studio led by God of War’s Stig Asmussen, was working on a project. And Wizards of the Coast revealed Warlock with a mysterious trailer during the 2025 Game Awards. Now, one of those projects has been cancelled, and I’m starting to worry.

Giant Skull was working on an unannounced Dungeons & Dragons game, which would have been their first project. However, Hasbro recently canceled it. According to reports, Wizards of the Coast decided the game, which was still in its early stages, wasn’t the right fit for the D&D brand. While the cancellation seems amicable, it does raise concerns about the future of D&D video games.

Giant Skull’s D&D Game Could’ve Been Great, But It Didn’t Sound Like Baldur’s Gate 4

We didn’t get a good look at Giant Skull’s planned Dungeons & Dragons game because it was still very early in development. However, given the talent involved, it likely would have been fantastic. While Giant Skull is a new studio, the people working there have a history of creating great games. For example, Asmussen was the lead developer on the popular Star Wars Jedi series. Although we never saw any trailers or gameplay footage, the game sounded promising.

The recently cancelled project was initially described as a sprawling new Dungeons & Dragons world with a strong focus on story, action-packed battles, and exciting exploration. It seemed like it would be a single-player action game, a departure from the turn-based style of Baldur’s Gate 3. However, given that Wizards of the Coast chose to cancel it, it’s clear they’re looking for something different after Baldur’s Gate 3. This makes me worry about the future of Warlock, another game that sounded similar, and whether it might face the same fate.

Next Look at Warlock Originally Teased for Summer 2026, And Here’s Hoping We Still Get One

The first trailer for Warlock appeared during The Game Awards in late 2025, but Invoke Studios and Wizards of the Coast haven’t shared much news since. We know it will be a third-person action-adventure RPG where you play as a Warlock. This is a different approach than the party-based RPG Baldur’s Gate 3, which I think is a good thing. Still, it’s been several months without any updates on the game. While the developers promised more information this summer in 2026, this recent news regarding Giant Skull’s D&D project isn’t encouraging.

Wizards might have cancelled Giant Skull’s game because it felt too much like Warlock – both were action-adventure RPGs based in the Dungeons & Dragons world. Since Warlock was being developed by an internal studio, focusing on that project likely seemed more logical. However, with so few details available about either game, it’s possible Wizards is struggling to decide how to follow up the huge success of Baldur’s Gate 3, which attracted many new D&D fans. If that’s true, Warlock could also be cancelled because it doesn’t fit the mold of a Baldur’s Gate 4 sequel.

Based on what we’ve seen so far of Warlock, I’m optimistic it will be a good direction. Switching to a single-player experience with a central character and a more focused story could be a smart move after Baldur’s Gate 3. I especially like the idea of really challenging players to master the Warlock class, offering a detailed experience that makes you think carefully about this spellcaster instead of just picking your go-to class like Druid.

As the season of gaming showcases like Summer Game Fest approaches, I’m hoping to see an update on Warlock. It’s been a while since we heard anything, especially after the cancellation of the Giant Skull project, and now feels like a good time to show more of the game. The initial teaser promised more information this summer, and if we don’t see anything soon, it would be a bit worrying. However, Warlock is still slated for release in 2027, so there’s no need to panic just yet.
